Fresh attacks on Israel's southern Beirut, many buildings destroyed

 Saturday 16 November 2024

Islamabad (News International. DW New. November 16, 2024) The Israeli army launched fresh airstrikes in the southern suburbs of Beirut, the Lebanese capital, on Saturday. According to AFPTV, the attacks came after local residents were warned to evacuate the area.

Since last Tuesday, the Israeli army has carried out several airstrikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut city, which is considered a Hezbollah stronghold.

An AFPTV video showed thick clouds of smoke rising from buildings in the area on Saturday morning. Shortly before these attacks, a spokesman for the Israeli army in one of his posts on X called for the evacuation of the residents of the area called Hara Harik.

The Arabic-language post pointed to specific buildings and told residents to move at least 500 meters away, saying, "You are close to facilities and installations belonging to Hezbollah, against which the future will continue." In the near future, the Israeli army will act with force.

A similar warning was issued before an attack on Saturday afternoon. Lebanon's state-run National News Agency (NNA) said Israel carried out three airstrikes in the early hours of the morning, including one near the Hara Harik area. According to the information of this agency, "In the first attack near Hara Harek, buildings were destroyed and damage was done in the area."

The NNA later reported a separate Israeli airstrike in al-Shiyah neighborhood.

A large number of civilians have been displaced from the area due to repeated Israeli airstrikes on South Beirut.

Clashes between Hezbollah and Israel have been ongoing since October 8 last year, but Israel has intensified its campaign of airstrikes in Lebanon since September 23 this year.

Lebanese authorities say more than 3,440 people have been killed in Lebanon since fighting between Hezbollah and Israel began in October last year.

Meanwhile, the World Bank said on Thursday that the conflict has cost Lebanon more than five billion dollars in economic losses, with the actual damage to urban infrastructure far greater.

Hezbollah's attacks on Israel

The Israeli military said on Saturday that it had destroyed two drones fired by the Hezbollah militia in Lebanon. The explosive-laden drones were shot down in the northern Galilee region. An air alert was also issued in view of the fear of falling debris. Alarm sirens were also sounded near Eilat in southern Israel, when a rocket was fired from the east toward Israel but failed to reach Israeli airspace, the military said.

Meanwhile, pro-Iranian militias in Iraq have claimed responsibility for the attack.

At the same time, Hezbollah claimed to have attacked the Israeli barracks in the Ramim region near the town of Manara in the north of the country. Initially, there was no comment from Israel.

The death toll in Gaza continues to rise

On the other hand, the Hamas-run Ministry of Health in Gaza said on Saturday that the total number of Palestinians killed in Israeli military operations since October 8 last year has now reached 43,799.

Among them, 35 people were killed during the last 24 hours. According to the ministry, more than 100,000 people have also been injured in the Israeli attacks.

About 1200 people were killed in the terrorist attack on Israel by the Palestinian militant group Hamas on October 7 last year, while the attackers took 250 people hostage and took them with them.

Israel then launched counter-attacks on Gaza, which are still ongoing and have led to mass casualties and the repeated displacement of millions of citizens of the coastal strip. Several international human rights organizations, including the United Nations, are describing the situation in Gaza as "extremely serious".
