․New Delhi (News International New - NNI. November 24, 2024) In Sambhal district of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, Hindu extremists have claimed another mosque from the Mughal era, saying that this mosque was built on the site of a temple. According to Kashmir Media Service, on the request of Hindus, a local court hastily ordered a survey of the mosque. Hindus had claimed in their petition that the mosque is actually an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, however, the management committee of the Shahi Jama Masjid and local Muslims expressed surprise at the hasty survey of the mosque.
Within a few hours of the court’s survey directive, Advocate Commissioner Ramesh Raghav started the survey process. The survey process was carried out in the presence of the District Magistrate and the District Police Chief.
During the survey, which lasted for one and a half to two hours, photography and videography of the mosque premises were taken. It may be recalled that Civil Judge Senior Division Aditya Singh ordered the survey of the mosque after a petition was filed by eight people led by pro-Hindutva lawyer Hari Shankar Jain and Hindu saint Mahant Rishi Raj Giri, who claimed the right to enter the mosque.
The mosque is said to have been built on the orders of the Mughal emperor Babur, which is shown as a historical monument on the official website of Sambhal district. However, Hindu extremists have claimed that the mosque is an ancient temple dedicated to Kalki, the last incarnation of Vishnu. Lawyer Zafar Ali, representing the mosque, said that the survey lasted for two hours.
Nothing objectionable was found during the survey. There was nothing that would have raised doubts. This has made it clear that the Shahi Jama Masjid is actually a mosque. He said that the survey was conducted immediately after the court order came. According to sources, the court gave its order at around 3:30 pm and the Advocate Commissioner’s survey began at 7 pm. A lawyer associated with the mosque said that they were not given a chance to register their objections nor was the necessary peace meeting called to avoid any untoward incident in the area. Samajwadi Party MP from Sambhal Ziaur Rehman Barq expressed concern over the Advocate Commissioner’s hasty start of the survey. He told reporters outside the mosque, “We were not given any notice. Our response was not sought.” He said that the mosque is protected under the Places of Worship Act, 1991. He said that despite this, some people want to spoil the environment of the state and the country.
