Mexico City (News International New - 28 November 2024) Mexican President Claudia Scheinbaum has said that the borders with the United States will not be closed. According to the Arab Broadcasting Agency, after a telephone conversation between US President-elect Donald Trump and the President of neighboring Mexico, Claudia Scheinbaum, the two sides have taken different positions in their statements.
According to the report, Donald Trump has said that the Mexican President has agreed that she will stop refugees from her country heading to the United States. However, the Mexican President then said in his statement on the social media platform X that Mexico’s position is that the borders are not closed.
Statements from both sides have portrayed the call positively, despite warnings from the Mexican government of retaliation after President-elect Trump threatened to impose a 25 percent tariff on Mexico on Monday. The US president-elect said on his Truth social platform that he had just had a great conversation with the new president of Mexico. She has agreed to stop immigration from Mexico to the United States and is effectively closing our southern border.
On the other hand, President Sheinbaum quickly responded to Donald Trump’s statement, insisting that he had explained the current comprehensive strategy for immigration from Mexico to the United States. President Sheinbaum said that thanks to this strategy, migrants are taken care of before they reach the border. We reiterate that Mexico’s position is not to close the border, but to build bridges between the government and the people.
Claudia Scheinbaum, who became Mexico's first female president, had previously shared brief details of the conversation, along with a photo of herself smiling during the phone call. Scheinbaum said the two leaders discussed strengthening cooperation on security issues and the campaign to stop drug use in Mexico. Earlier, Donald Trump had vowed on social media that one of his first actions after taking office in January would be to impose a 25 percent tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada.
