World Cup in Saudi Arabia a threat to workers, Amnesty says

 Saturday 23 November 2024

Islamabad (News International / Pakistan New News - DW Urdu - 23 November 2024) Saudi Arabia is currently the only candidate to host the 2034 World Cup. A vote on whether to award the World Cup to Saudi Arabia will be held at the FIFA meeting on 11 December.

“If Saudi Arabia is awarded the 2034 World Cup without any guarantees of reforms, it will have a clear and foreseeable negative impact on human rights,” says Steve Cockburn, Amnesty International’s head of labour rights and sports.

‘’

He added that “fans will face discrimination, residents will be forcibly evicted, workers will be exploited and many lives could be at risk.

‘’

According to Steve Cockburn, Saudi Arabia will need a large number of foreign workers to organize the 2034 World Cup.

However, the Saudi government has not yet committed to implementing the necessary reforms to protect the rights of these individuals. In particular, there has been no concrete action to change Saudi Arabia’s “sponsorship” system, set a minimum wage for workers, allow them to join unions, or protect the lives of workers.

The Saudi government has also failed to address serious issues such as curbing freedom of expression and imprisoning innocent people simply for expressing their views.

This gives the impression that the Saudi government is not serious about these reforms. FIFA should not allow Saudi Arabia to host the World Cup unless adequate measures are taken to protect human rights in Saudi Arabia.

“If FIFA does not acknowledge the seriousness of these threats, and does not take steps to prevent them, it will be clear that its commitment to human rights is only a pretense,” said Andrea Florence, director of the Sports Rights Alliance.

‘’

The Saudi government directly or indirectly owns 98% of the shares of the country’s major oil company, Aramco. The company signed a four-year deal earlier this year to provide financial support to FIFA, worth $400 million.

FIFA has also been criticized for saying that the decision to award Saudi Arabia the 2034 World Cup was a sloppy one.

FIFA announced on October 4, 2023 that only countries from Asia and Oceania could bid to host the World Cup, and then gave countries less than a month to submit their applications.

Saudi Arabia expressed its interest in hosting the 2034 World Cup within hours of FIFA’s announcement, and Australia announced its withdrawal from hosting the event in favor of Saudi Arabia on October 31.

However, according to a FIFA spokesperson, FIFA will adopt a transparent and fair procedure for hosting the 2030 and 2034 World Cups, as in the past.
