280,000 people have been displaced in Syria in just one week. United Nations

Displaced people may have to remain in this situation for several days or even months to come. World Food Program

Saturday 7 December 2024

Geneva (News International New / Latest News - International Press Agency. 07 December 2024) The United Nations has revealed that 280,000 people have been displaced in just one week due to the escalation of fighting in Syria. According to the report, Samir Abdul Jaber, Head of Emergency Coordination at the United Nations World Food Program (WFP), told journalists in Geneva that since November 27, we have had 280,000 displaced people, not including the number of people who fled Lebanon during the recent tensions.

In Syria, a country that has been suffering from a long civil war, a large number of people have been displaced during a week-long attack by “Hayat al-Sham” fighters. Recently, there has been a pause in the two-month-long war in neighboring Lebanon, during which hundreds of people from Lebanon also migrated to Syria. It should be noted that yesterday, the head of the rebel group, Abu Muhammad al-Julani, said that their goal is to overthrow Bashar al-Assad. In an interview with CNN, he said that when it comes to the objectives of our “revolution”, we have come to overthrow the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The World Food Program has warned that the number of recent displaced people in Syria is the highest since the civil war that broke out here 13 years ago, and they have already been affected for many years. Samir Abdul-Jaber said that the World Food Program and other human rights organizations are trying to reach places where people need assistance, in this regard, we are working to create safe routes so that aid can reach those who deserve it. He said that the displaced people may have to stay in this situation for several days or for the next several months, which is why we also need more funds on an emergency basis. If the current situation continues, it is expected that 1.5 million people will become homeless and they will need our help. The fighters say they have already captured northeastern Syria and are now turning their attention to the eastern regions, where former Syrian army personnel have withdrawn, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR). The Syrian army and its Iranian-backed allies have suddenly withdrawn from Deir Ezzor province as an offensive led by an al-Qaeda-linked group inflicted staggering losses on President Bashar al-Assad's government in the northern and central regions.

The Syrian forces (Syrian Democratic Forces) said in a statement that they have deployed troops in Deir Ezzor province and the western side of the Euphrates River to ensure the safety of our people. The Arab majority council supports the Syrian Democratic Forces. The SOHR said that commanders of Syrian government forces and Iranian-backed allied groups have suddenly withdrawn from Deir Ezzor city and its countryside.

Their redeployment to the oasis town of Palmyra came as anti-government fighters led by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group approached the outskirts of Homs, Syria’s third largest city in western Syria. “To protect our people, fighters from the Deir Ezzor Military Council have been deployed to Deir Ezzor city and west of the Euphrates River,” the Arab-majority council affiliated with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said in a statement. The monitoring group said Bashar al-Assad’s forces had also loosened their grip in the south, allowing armed groups in Daraa province to take control of the Nasr Jaber border crossing with Jordan. Jordanian Interior Minister Mazen al-Faria said the crossing had been closed. The head of the monitoring group said armed groups had seized a border crossing with Jordan as well as nearby checkpoints and towns. Elsewhere in the province, they had seized a police station and an air force intelligence base. In addition, a police station and an air force intelligence base have been captured in other parts of the province. Daraa province was the epicenter of the uprising against Bashar al-Assad's government in 2011, but returned to government control in 2018 under a ceasefire deal brokered by Assad's ally Russia.

In Nawa, north of Daraa city, local fighters succeeded in capturing several locations after a major attack targeting the Military Intelligence Department. In retaliation, government forces shelled residential areas in Nawa, which spread to other towns. Daraa province has been plagued by unrest in recent years, with frequent attacks, armed clashes, and killings, some of which have been claimed by the extremist organization ISIS.
