Islamabad (News International / Pakistan News - 11th Dec, 2024 ) Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina addressed a function of her party workers in New York for the first time since leaving power in August and fleeing to India on Wednesday and lashed out at the head of the interim government, Muhammad Yunus, accusing him of “genocide” and failing to protect other minorities, including Hindus.
Rising tensions between India and Bangladesh
“Today I am being accused of genocide. However, in reality, Yunus has been involved in genocide under a carefully prepared plan. Behind this genocide… are the student coordinators and Yunus masterminds.”
Hasina had fled to India after resigning after massive anti-government protests in August, after which this was her first speech since which she commented on the overall situation in Bangladesh.

'Did not even have time to resign'
"The armed protesters were heading towards Ganbhaban (the prime minister's residence). If the security guards had opened fire, many lives would have been lost. I told them not to open fire. It was only a matter of 25-30 minutes and I was forced to leave.
"
Relations between Sheikh Hasina and Yunus have long been strained, with the former describing the head of Bangladesh's caretaker government as "power-hungry" and repeating her previous allegations of Yunus' involvement in corruption and money laundering related to Grameen Bank operations.

Supporting the Indian allegations, Sheikh Hasina said, "Why this oppression of minorities? Why are they being brutally oppressed and attacked? People are not even being given the right to justice now.
.. I was not even given time to resign."

India alleges that many of Hasina's supporters, including religious minorities, have been targeted in Bangladesh since Hasina was ousted in August.

India said last week that Bangladesh's interim government must fulfill its responsibility to protect all minorities and expressed concern over extremist rhetoric and rising incidents of violence against Hindus.

Tensions between India and Bangladesh have been rising since the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government and her flight to India.
Sheikh Hasina has been living in Delhi since she arrived in India in August, although Bangladeshi leaders have been demanding her extradition.
And the new conflict began after the arrest of a Hindu leader in Bangladesh, Chinmoy Krishna Das. Dozens of activists of a Hindu extremist organization stormed the Bangladesh consulate in Agartala, the capital of India's border province of Tripura, on December 2, protesting Das' arrest.
The consulate was vandalized and the Bangladesh flag was also burned.
Dhaka has suspended visa services in Agartala after the attack on its consulate and summoned the Indian High Commissioner in Bangladesh to lodge a protest.
