Islamabad (News International / Pakistan News - APP - 16th December, 2024) British High Commissioner to Pakistan Jane Marriott has said that Britain is keen to further strengthen its trade partnership with Pakistan. There is immense potential in Pakistan’s economy and we must adopt a common strategy to capitalize on it. She said this while addressing a seminar on “Pakistan-UK Relations: Prospects for a New Era” organized by the Policy Research Institute (PRI) here on Monday as the chief guest.


In her address, Jane Marriott highlighted various aspects of Pakistan-UK relations and discussed opportunities to further strengthen these relations. She appreciated the educational relations between the two countries and said that Britain will provide more educational opportunities for the youth of Pakistan.


Citing the UK’s Chevening Scholarship Program as an example, she said that education will play a fundamental role in taking these relations to new heights.


Emphasizing Britain’s efforts for women’s education and economic empowerment in Pakistan, he said that social progress is not possible without the development of women and Britain will continue to fully cooperate with Pakistan in this regard. He highlighted the climate change crisis and said that Britain will support environmentally friendly initiatives in Pakistan.

Environmental issues are the biggest challenge of our time and cooperation in this is indispensable. Jane Marriott said that Britain will help Pakistan in the development of the digital economy and information technology so that the country can be provided with new economic opportunities. She mentioned the cooperation between the two countries in the health sector and stressed the need for joint efforts on epidemics and public health issues.

Jane Marriott reiterated Britain’s support for legal reforms and the promotion of good governance in Pakistan and said that Britain will help strengthen the justice and law system. She stressed on promoting cultural relations and said that Pakistan’s culture is diverse and beautiful and Britain will help Pakistan in presenting this culture to the world.

The people of the two countries can be brought closer through cultural exchanges. In his recent address, the High Commissioner reiterated the UK’s commitment to strengthening its long-standing partnership with Pakistan, emphasizing global challenges, the climate crisis, education, health and economic development. He said that the world is currently grappling with economic, climate and security challenges and countries like Pakistan need international support to address these issues.

Terming climate change as the biggest threat to humanity, the British High Commissioner said that Pakistan, which contributes only 1% to global carbon emissions, is the most vulnerable to climate disasters. He cited the devastating floods and droughts of 2022 and said that Pakistan will need US$348 billion by 2030 to combat climate impacts.

Speaking on peace and order and global security, he appreciated Pakistan’s sacrifices and said that Pakistan is playing a key role in establishing global peace. Expressing deep concern over the situation in Afghanistan, he stressed the need for global cooperation to tackle the menace of terrorism. British High Commissioner Jane Marriott, while sharing her views on terrorism, economic stability and Pak-UK relations, said that terrorism is once again becoming an emerging global concern in the current era.

He said that international cooperation is essential to eliminate terrorism and in this context, the second meeting of the “Terrorism Dialogue” between the UK and Pakistan will be held in London next year to further promote cooperation in the field of common objectives and security. In his closing remarks, APR President Ambassador Dr. Raza Muhammad thanked Jane Marriott and said that this seminar will prove to be important in exploring new possibilities of cooperation between Pakistan and the UK. We must translate these discussions into practical actions so that better results can be achieved for both countries.
