Sarah murder case raises many questions, Keir Starmer, sentencing to be handed down on Tuesday

Friday, December 13, 2024

London (News International / Pakistan News - NNI. 13 December 2024) British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has stressed the need to ensure the safety of home-schooled students. He has said that there are many questions that need to be answered after the brutal murder of ten-year-old Pakistani-origin British student Sarah Sharif. According to a foreign news agency, Sarah’s father and stepfather have been charged with murder.

Details of the inhuman atrocities inflicted on Sarah Sharif have come to light during the proceedings of this case. Despite clear warning signs, the failure of child protection services has also been proven. Keir Starmer said that this case motivates us to focus on ensuring the safety of children, especially those who are being schooled at home.

Sarah Sharif was found dead in her home in August 2023. There were signs of injuries on her body. Bones were broken, the body was burned and there were bite marks. She was subjected to years of abuse. Several months before her death, her father Irfan Sharif had taken her out of school in the name of home schooling. Earlier, Sarah’s teacher had told Child Protection Services that Sarah had scratches on her body.

Child Protection Services had investigated the matter at the time but took no action. Irfan Sharif had married Benish Batool after separating from Sarah Sharif’s mother Olga Sharif. During this time, custody of Sarah Sharif was being taken and given. Despite Olga’s numerous allegations of abuse against Irfan Sharif, Sarah Sharif was given to Irfan Sharif in 2019.

Children’s Commissioner Rachel D’Souza says Sarah’s death has highlighted serious weaknesses in our child protection system. Rachel D’Souza says it is simply madness to allow a child to be taken out of school when she is at risk. It is necessary to ban home schooling of children who are at risk of abuse. The Department of Education said that it is ensuring that no child is a victim of any flaw in the system and at the same time efforts are being made to ensure the safety of children in the case of home schooling.

The leader of the House of Commons, the lower house of the British Parliament, Lucy Powell, has said that details of the protection of children's social character and safeguards regarding home schooling will be made public soon. Faisal Malik, the uncle of Irfan Sharif, Benish Batool and Sara, who has been acquitted of the murder charge, will be sentenced on Tuesday on the charge of causing or allowing the death to occur.
