Centurion (News International / Pakistan News - NNI. 24 December 2024) The team management and selection committee regarding former Pakistan Test team captain Babar Azam want him to be part of the team for the first Test to be played at the Super Sports Park Centurion from December 26. According to details, the right-handed batsman was not part of the team for the next two Tests after the first Test against England in Multan in October this year due to his continuous poor performance in Test cricket. However, now the team management has decided to make Babar Azam, who needs just 3 runs to complete his 4,000 runs in Test cricket, part of the first Test team against South Africa.
For this, out-of-form opener Abdullah Shafiq, who was dismissed for zero 3 times in a row in 3 ODI matches against South Africa, has now been decided to be dropped from the Test team and in his place, captain Shan Masood will open the innings for the Pakistan team along with Saim Ayub.
Left-handed opener Shan Masood, who has played 38 Tests, currently bats at number 3 in the Test team, but playing as an opener will not be a new experience for him. Shan Masood, who made his Test debut against South Africa in Abu Dhabi in October 2013, started his career as an opener.
Shan Masood has opened the innings 46 times in 72 innings in his career and has scored 5 to 4 centuries as an opener in Test cricket. On the other hand, former Test captain Babar Azam, who has scored 148 runs with 2 half-centuries in 3 ODIs against South Africa, is making a comeback after being dropped from the Test team at a time when he is struggling to regain his form in Test cricket.
It should be noted that Babar Azam, who has scored 3997 runs in 55 Test matches at an average of 54.46 with the help of 9 centuries, has been facing difficulties since playing an innings of 161 runs in the first innings of the National Stadium Karachi Test against New Zealand in December 2022. Since then, he has not been able to score any half-century in the 18 innings he has played in Test cricket, out of which he has scored 366 runs, and his best score has been 41 runs in the second innings against Australia in the Melbourne Test in December 2023.
