Forty-eight more Palestinians killed in fresh Israeli attacks on Gaza

 Saturday 28 December 2024

ISLAMABAD (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - DW Urdu - 28th December 2024) The Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza said on Saturday that 48 more people have been killed in Israeli attacks on the coastal strip in the past 24 hours. This brings the total number of deaths in the Palestinian territories in the war that has been going on since October last year to 45,484.

The ministry also said in a statement that at least 108,090 people have been injured in the more than 14-month-long war between Israel and Hamas.

The war began on 7th October 2023 with a terrorist attack by the Palestinian militant group Hamas on southern Israel, in which 1,200 people were killed, most of them civilians.

The attackers took 250 hostages with them upon their return, of whom 100 are believed to still be in Hamas custody.

Kamal Adwan Hospital Forced to Close

The World Health Organization (WHO) and health officials in Gaza said on Saturday that Israeli military operations targeting Hamas militants have forced the closure of a major hospital in northern Gaza and its director has been detained by Israeli forces.

Gaza’s Health Ministry officials said the attack on Kamal Adwan Hospital had rendered the medical facility “useless,” worsening an already dire health crisis in Gaza.

“This morning’s raid on Kamal Adwan Hospital has closed the last major health facility in northern Gaza,” the WHO said in a post on X.

Initial reports indicate that some key areas were badly burned and destroyed during the raid. The Israeli operation began on Friday morning.

The WHO said 60 health workers and about 25 in critical condition, some on ventilators, were reportedly at the hospital.

The UN health agency said all types of patients had been forced to be transferred to the damaged and under-performing Indonesian hospital.

WHO officials added, “There is deep concern for their safety.” Gaza’s health ministry reported that Israeli forces had detained Hossam Abu Safia, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, along with several members of the medical staff.

Gaza’s Civil Defense Agency said its head in northern Gaza, Ahmed Hassan al-Kahlot, and Abu Safia were being held together.

The Israeli military did not comment on the arrests.

In the days leading up to the raid, Abu Safia had repeatedly warned of the critical situation at the hospital and accused Israeli forces of targeting the medical facility.

He issued a statement on Monday, accusing Israel of targeting the hospital “with the intention of killing and forcibly displacing those present there.”

On Thursday, Abu Safiya said five staff members had been killed in an Israeli strike near the hospital. Israel has intensified its ground and air campaign in northern Gaza since October 6, saying it aims to prevent Hamas militants from regrouping.
