Foreign Diplomatic Activity in Syria Increases
In Syria, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and other militant groups led by the Syrian opposition overthrew the government of President Bashar al-Assad on December 8.
Assad fled to Russia after more than a decade in power. Syria has been economically and socially devastated by years of civil war. The fall of the Assad regime was welcomed by the international community and most Syrians.
What will happen to the Kurdish areas?
The future of the Kurdish areas in northeastern Syria is a key issue, according to Geir Pedersen, the UN special envoy for Syria.
There are fears that the chaos could lead to a clash between the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces and the Turkish-backed group. Ankara alleges that the People’s Protection Units, a unit of the Syrian Democratic Forces, have roots in the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, which both Ankara and Washington consider a terrorist group.
Meanwhile, Syria's new interim rulers have kept key institutions running, and a commercial flight departed Damascus airport on Wednesday.
Coordination is also ongoing with several countries and international organizations.
European Union President Ursula von der Leyen has also stated that direct coordination will be initiated with the new administration. Meanwhile, Britain, Germany and France have sent their own diplomatic delegations to Damascus.
