Athens (News International/ Pakistan News - 17th December, 2024) Pakistan's Ambassador to Greece Amir Aftab Qureshi has expressed concerns and said that dozens of Pakistanis who drowned in the boat accident are still missing and their hopes of survival have been lost. While holding a press conference, he said that 4 Pakistanis have been confirmed dead in the boat accident so far. There were more than 80 Pakistanis on board the boat, which sank thousands of feet deep in the sea at an unknown location. Rescue operations are underway at the scene of the accident, but there is little hope of survival for the missing people.
The Pakistani ambassador says that there were Pakistanis on board 5 boats illegally leaving Libya. The boat first cracked after which it sank. The bodies of the deceased citizens will be sent to Pakistan at government expense. Steps are being taken to send the bodies back to Pakistan. They are in touch with the Greek authorities in this regard. In addition, facilities are also being provided to the survivors.
In this regard, Foreign Office Spokesperson Mumtaz Zahrabloch said in her statement that we express our regret over the loss of lives of Pakistani citizens. The Pakistani diplomatic mission in Athens is in constant contact with the Greek authorities. The diplomatic mission is in contact with the local authorities to bring the bodies of Pakistani citizens back to Pakistan. In addition, the Foreign Ministry has also released a list of 47 Pakistanis rescued after the recent boat sinking incident in Greece. She said that this list is based on interviews conducted by the Pakistani Embassy in Athens and information provided by the Greek authorities. The Foreign Ministry has activated its Crisis Management Unit in Islamabad to facilitate Pakistanis in Greece regarding the boat sinking incident. The Pakistani Embassy in Athens is in contact with the coast guard who are directly engaged in search and rescue operations. Embassy officials have also reached the Greek island of Crete to meet the surviving Pakistanis so that they can be provided with all kinds of assistance.
