Ottawa (News International New / Sputnik - International Press Agency - December 14, 2024) Canada has said that it will respond strongly if the incoming US administration backs down on its commitment to impose tariffs on its imports from Canada. Canadian Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland has said that if the US imposes unfair tariffs on Canadian imports, there is no doubt that we will respond and Canada’s response will necessarily be strong. I am confident that it will be effective.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Finance Minister Freeland and two other provincial leaders recently spoke in two phone calls to discuss how best to respond if US President-elect Donald Trump imposes a 25% tariff on US imports from Canada. According to the American broadcaster, Donald Trump recently said in a post on his Twitter account that he will impose a 25% tax on all products entering the country from Canada and Mexico and an additional 10% tax on products from China as his first executive orders as president. He has said that he will keep the tariffs in place until Canada takes strong action against drugs and illegal immigrants crossing the border.
He has said that these tariffs will remain in place until our country is not invaded by drugs such as fentanyl and illegal immigrants. Bloomberg reported that Canada is examining the possible use of export taxes on consumer goods including uranium, oil and potash. A source in the Canadian government said that while all options are on the table, it will still take a long time for ministers and officials to reach a decision.
Finance Minister Freeland has said Ottawa and the provinces will need to present a united front, but some provincial leaders are unhappy with the proposed response. Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe has said the Trudeau government’s export taxes would be a complete betrayal. Saskatchewan produces oil, uranium and potash. In a post on the social media platform, he said that export taxes on these goods in response to U.S. tariffs would only add to the damage to our economy and our jobs. Alberta Premier Daniel Smith said his oil-producing province would neither support cutting off Alberta’s energy exports to the United States nor would it support a tariff war with our largest trading partner and closest ally.
