Indian Punjab: Akali Dal leader attacked in Golden Temple

Islamabad (News International/ Pakistan Point News - 12th Dec, 2024 ) A shooting incident took place on Wednesday morning at the Golden Temple, a holy site for Sikhs in Amritsar, Punjab, India, when former Deputy Chief Minister and Akali Dal chief Sikh Bir Singh Badal was targeted. According to reports, Badal is completely safe.
Police have identified the shooter as Narayan Singh Choura, who is said to be an activist of the Khalistani group Babbar Khalsa International (BKI).
Immediately after the shooting, people present at the scene overpowered him and handed him over to the police.

Sikh Bir Singh Badal, the highest religious body of Sikhs, had recently sentenced him to death by the Akal Takht and was serving as a guard at the temple gate under the same religious sentence.

The Akal Takht had convicted him for "mistakes" committed during the Shiromani Akali Dal government in Punjab from 2007 to 2017, when he was deputy chief minister and his father was the chief minister of the state.
These mistakes included incidents of blasphemy in Kotakpura as well as police firing.
In the videos of the shooting, he can be seen sitting at the entrance of the temple in a wheelchair, wearing a blue 'sewadaar' uniform, holding a spear, when the shooter opened fire on him. However, the temple officials present there reacted quickly and subdued the shooter.

What is being said about the shooter?
There are reports in the Indian media that the attacker, Narayan Singh Choura, has served a prison sentence in Punjab on multiple charges. There are about a dozen cases registered against Choura in Amritsar, Tarn Taran and Ropar districts.
His role in the Golden Temple attack was limited to ‘advice’, UK
Indian media quoted sources as saying that he had also allegedly visited Pakistan in 1984, where he received training in weapons and explosives and allegedly wrote a book on guerrilla warfare.
He is also accused of jailbreak. In the sensational 2004 jailbreak case, four key prisoners, including the killers of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, escaped by digging a 94-foot tunnel.
