Islamabad (News International / Pakistan News - 13th Dec, 2024 ) : India's young chess player Gokesh Domaraju on Thursday became the youngest world chess champion. He achieved the title by defeating China's Ding Liren in the final match of the series in Singapore.

The 18-year-old from the southern Indian city of Chennai has become the "youngest world champion in history", the International Chess Federation said in a post on social media platform X.

The previous youngest world champion was Russian player Garry Kasparov, who achieved this feat in 1985 at the age of 22.
After five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand, Gokesh is the second Indian to win the title, hailing from the southern state of Tamil Nadu.

Gokesh qualified for the match against Ding by winning the Candidates Tournament last April. While Chinese player Ding won the title in 2023 by defeating Russia's Ian Nepomukhi.

Ding's slight mistake and Gokesh's victory
In the 14th game of the Chinese-Indian pair, Gokesh defeated China's Ding Liren with a score of 7.5 to 6.5.
According to experts, the Chinese player made a mistake that is described as a "mistake made in a comfortable position".
The match looked set to go to a tiebreak on Friday, but Gokish managed to beat Ding when the Chinese player made a big mistake on his 55th move.
"When I realized I had made a mistake, I was completely shocked," Ding said after the match.

After his win, Gokish praised his opponent's performance, saying Ding "played like a champion."
Gokish thanked his many trainers and other training staff, including German grandmaster Vincent Kemmer.
Magnus Carlsen, the new king of chess
The match lasted a long 14 rounds, which was considered a "classic" event. It had a prize money of US$2.5 million.
