Iran: Demand for independent investigation into allegations of crimes against humanity

 Monday, December 2, 2024

Islamabad (News International / Pakistan News - 2nd December, 2024 ) The victims of the crackdown on nationwide public protests in Iran have accused the government of crimes against humanity and called for ensuring justice and accountability for these incidents.

The victims, who belong to the ‘Women, Life, Freedom Movement’, met the UN-established fact-finding commission in Munich, Germany.

On this occasion, they said that legal reforms are needed in Iran as the government is using the law against citizens.

They said that the Iranian authorities are continuously harassing the protesters and their families. However, they will not give up their struggle to achieve justice inside and outside the country.

Most of the 50-member delegation that met with the Equality, Freedom and Dignity Commission faced serious human rights violations in Iran, which forced them to leave the country in search of safety.

The individuals were involved in a nationwide movement that began in September 2022 after the death of a woman named Gina Mahasa Amini in police custody for allegedly violating the hijab law.

The protests have seen widespread arrests, torture, and imprisonment, with hundreds reportedly executed.

The meeting also included people whose children or loved ones had been tortured and injured during the protests.

Rather than speaking of revenge, most of the victims stressed the need for equality, freedom, and dignity. They praised the courage of those who were following their conscience in Iran and helping them. These included medical professionals and lawyers who risked their lives to support them.

Call for international cooperation

The UN commission will present its report on the violations of the rights of those participating in the protests to the Human Rights Council in March 2025. The report will include information collected from victims and a strategy for justice, accountability and redress to protect human rights in Iran.

The victims called for the abolition of discriminatory laws against women and minorities in Iran, saying that the presence of repressive laws and the absence of an independent judiciary are fueling repression in Iran and creating a lack of accountability.

They welcomed the commission’s report but expressed disappointment at the international community’s failure to stop the repression. They said that more action was needed by the international community in this matter to force Iran to fulfill its commitments under international law.

A story of courage and courage

The head of the commission, Sarah Hussain, said that among those who met her were young girls, boys and children who expressed their views on truth, justice, accountability and reparation.

This meeting is very important in bringing the voices of these victims to the world who are demanding protection of their rights and justice at the global level.
Viviana Krstićev, a member of the fact-finding commission, said that in the light of the experiences of the victims and the opinions of experts, actionable recommendations will be presented to the international community, including measures for the rehabilitation of victims, accountability and truth-finding, and reparations.

Commission member Shaheen Sardar Ali said that she was encouraged by hearing about the struggle of the victims who raised their voices against oppression and succeeded in achieving protection. Her words are a reminder of solidarity and support for the victims of the 'Zin, Zindagi, Azadi Movement'.
