ISLAMABAD (News International / Pakistan News - 12th December, 2024) At least 35 Palestinians were killed in Israeli shelling of various areas in the Gaza Strip on Thursday morning, December 12. According to the Palestinian news agency Wafa, children and women were among those killed in the shelling of a residential building on Al-Jala Street in Gaza City.
The news agency added that another 15 people were killed in the shelling of a house west of the Nusirat camp in the central Gaza Strip.
The house that was targeted was home to displaced Palestinians. According to Wafa News Agency, people providing security to aid workers in the southern Gaza Strip city of Rafah were targeted, killing 13 Palestinians and wounding several others.
Earlier, medical experts had said that at least 30 people were also injured in the Rafah attack, many of whom are in critical condition.
Medical experts said another group of people guarding an aid convoy in the nearby city of Khan Younis was hit by a separate Israeli airstrike, wounding several people. There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military on the attacks.
Aid trucks are often looted by armed groups as they enter Gaza, prompting the militant group Hamas in Gaza to set up a task force to combat them.
Hamas fighters have killed more than two dozen members of the looting gang in recent months, according to Hamas sources and medical experts. Hamas says at least 700 police officers guarding aid trucks in Gaza have been killed in Israeli military strikes since the war with Israel began on October 7, 2023.
UN Resolution
Earlier on Wednesday, the UN General Assembly overwhelmingly approved a resolution calling for an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip and the immediate release of all Israeli hostages.
General Assembly resolutions do not have any legal binding force, but they carry political weight, reflecting the global perspective on the war. The United States, Israel and seven other countries voted against the ceasefire resolution, while 13 countries abstained.
The ongoing war in Gaza began when Hamas militants launched a terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, in which about 1,200 people were killed, most of them civilians, and about 250 people were kidnapped, including children and the elderly.
According to Hamas Health Ministry officials in Gaza, about 45,000 Palestinians have been killed so far in Israel’s retaliatory military operations. They say more than half of the dead were women and children. Israel, without providing any evidence, says more than 17,000 Palestinian militants have been killed in its military operations.
On the other hand, the US-backed mediators for the ceasefire in Gaza, Qatar and Egypt, have not yet been able to convince both sides, Israel and Hamas, to agree to a ceasefire and release Israeli hostages.
