Lonely elderly people, a challenge for Japanese society

 Monday, December 16, 2024

Islamabad (News International / Pakistan News - DW  News - 16 December 2024) At the age of 85, Ikko Arai finally retired on November 30. She says she is happy to step back from her responsibilities at a non-profit organization in Tokyo, but she is also a little worried.

Arai has been living alone since her husband died 16 years ago and fears that quitting work will isolate her from Japanese society and potentially lead to a “lonely death.”

It is a common perception for Japan’s increasingly aging population. According to a report published in late November by Japan’s National Institute of Population and Social Security Research, the proportion of single-person households will reach 44.3 percent nationwide by 2050, with the rate expected to reach 54.1 percent in Tokyo alone.

The number of people aged 65 and over living alone is predicted to reach 10.83 million by 2050, 1.5 times higher than in 2020.

Fear of loneliness

"The fear of being alone is very high," Arai told DW. "I have a long list of concerns, but as long as I am well, I will continue to fight my battle."

"Until now, I have not felt social isolation because of my work, because I was always busy, but now after retirement, I will not have those hobbies available to me, so now I have to face the reality," she adds.

After working for the Women's Association for Better Aging Society (WABAS) for 32 years, where she eventually became secretary general, Arai has a keen understanding of the challenges faced by older people in Japan's fast-paced society.

“We founded this association in 1983 to reduce the need for nurses to be constantly busy caring for the elderly and to make Japanese society better for the elderly by socializing the caregiving process.”

Social isolation

Social isolation is a challenge that elderly people face when their children are no longer around.

They can face financial difficulties, especially when their health is poor.

Arai says that elderly people living alone are increasingly at risk from organized crime groups, which target the elderly. Japan has seen a wave of burglaries, some of which have injured or killed elderly people.
