Saudi Arabia expresses solidarity with Germany after car accident, arrests Saudi doctor
Saturday 21 December 2024
Berlin (UrduPoint News / Latest News - International Press Agency. December 21, 2024) A man drove his car into people at a Christmas market in the eastern German city of Magdeburg, killing two people and injuring 60. According to the German broadcaster, the driver was arrested at the scene. The market was packed with shoppers over the weekend. Footage showed the suspect being arrested on a walkway in the middle of the road.
The two dead included an adult and a small child, but authorities said the risk of more deaths could not be ruled out as 15 people were seriously injured. Saxony-Anhalt Interior Minister Tamara Zichang said the suspect was a 50-year-old Saudi doctor who moved to Germany in 2006. He said he was practicing medicine in Bernburg, about 40 kilometers south of Magdeburg.
Saxony-Anhalt Governor Rainer Heisloff said that according to the circumstances, he is the only culprit, so as far as we know, the city is no longer in danger. On the other hand, Saudi Arabia has expressed solidarity with Germany after the car accident at the Christmas market. The Saudi Foreign Ministry said in a statement on “X” that the Saudi government has expressed solidarity with the German people and the families of the victims. The report said that the incident shook the city and damaged a celebration that is part of a centuries-old German tradition. After the incident, several other German cities canceled their Christmas markets that were to be held over the weekend as a precautionary measure and in solidarity with Magdeburg. Eight years ago, a truck drove into a Christmas market in Berlin, killing 13 people and injuring dozens more. The man involved in the incident was killed in a shootout in Italy a few days later. Hours later, sirens blared through the market’s festive decorations, garlands of stars and leaves. Magdeburg resident Doreen Stephan said she was at a concert in a nearby church when she heard the sirens. The noise was so loud that you had to assume something terrible had happened. She called the accident a “black day” for the city.
Stefan said, "We are shaking. We have the utmost sympathy for the families of the victims and hope that nothing has happened to our relatives, friends and acquaintances." Governor Rainer Heislof said that flags will be flown at half-mast in Saxony-Anhalt and the federal government plans to do the same. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz wrote on the "X" that my sympathies are with the victims and their relatives. We stand with them and the people of Magdeburg.
