Islamabad (UrduPoint News - 28th December 2024) Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has said that overbilling is not acceptable, action will be taken against officers involved in overbilling, the Prime Minister has directed the electricity distribution companies to complete the work of installing smart meters soon, a review meeting was held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif regarding the performance of electricity distribution companies, in which Federal Ministers Ahad Khan Cheema, Sardar Owais Ahmed Khan Leghari, Ministers of State Shaza Fatima, Ali Pervez Malik, Prime Minister’s Coordinator Rana Ehsan Afzal and relevant senior government officers participated.


The issues of Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO), Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO) and Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO) were discussed in the meeting.


The participants were given a detailed briefing on the performance of LESCO, PESCO and FESCO. In the briefing on the performance of Lahore, Peshawar and Faisalabad Electric Supply Company, it was informed that LESCO’s recovery till November was 96.82 percent, PESCO’s recovery was 87.98 percent and FESCO’s recovery was 97.57 percent.


The Prime Minister expressed concern over the slow pace in the process of appointing the chief executive officers of the electricity distribution companies. The Prime Minister was informed in the briefing that LESCO’s recovery till November in the financial year 2024-25 was 96.82 percent, PESCO’s recovery was 87.98 percent and FESCO’s recovery was 97.57 percent. In terms of transmission and distribution losses till November in the financial year 2024-25, LESCO was 13.04 percent, PESCO was 33 percent while FESCO was 6.01 percent.


The participants were informed that consumers have access to call centers, emails, websites, interactive voice response, NEPRA’s mobile and web services for redressal of complaints and other services, while free access to helpline 118 is being ensured from all mobile phone operators for any kind of complaints regarding electricity distribution. The Prime Minister, while speaking during the meeting, said that the work of installing smart meters should be completed soon so that transparency can be brought in the billing system. Overbilling is not acceptable in any way, strict action will be taken against the officers involved. Concrete steps should be taken to prevent electricity theft. Recruitment of manpower in electricity distribution companies should be done on merit. No lapse in transparency in the recruitment process will be tolerated. All resources should be utilized to achieve the target given by NEPRA.
