Islamabad (News International / Pakistan News - 12th Dec, 2024 ) Pakistan Civil Aviation Director General, Nader Shafi Dar, has expressed hope that Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flights to the UK will resume soon after the recent clearance from the European Union.
‘Breakfast in Pakistan, Lunch in Paris’ PI flights to Europe resume
Dar expressed hope that PIA flights to the UK are likely to resume in early March.
In a statement, Dar confirmed that a delegation from the UK Department of Transport is scheduled to visit Pakistan next month, with an online meeting to be held in the third week of December.
He said that the official visit is planned for January and it is hoped that flights to the UK can resume soon after the visit, possibly in early March.
Political parties clash over PIA privatization
Dar also said that the UK’s review of Pakistan’s aviation standards would be similar to the recent EU reviews, which yielded positive results for Pakistan. “We have achieved good results with the EU, and we expect UK flights to resume soon,” he added.
“Before the suspension of flights, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) operated a significant number of weekly flights to the UK, including 10 to London, nine to Manchester, and two to Birmingham.
PIA expects a significant increase in revenue on the resumption of services to both the UK and Europe.
PIA’s Value Increase
The possible resumption of these flights will significantly improve air travel connectivity for Pakistani passengers travelling to the UK and other European destinations.
Pakistan International Airlines will resume flights to Europe in January, starting from Paris.
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) had banned PIA from flying to Europe in 2020, expressing doubts about the ability of Pakistani authorities and Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Authority to ensure international flight standards.
One reason for this was the investigation after a PIA plane crashed in Karachi, in which reports emerged that several pilots had fake licenses. The accident killed 97 people.
It should be noted that the Pakistani government plans to sell 60 percent of the shares of the national flag carrier PIA, but it has not yet received a suitable bid for it.
A PIA spokesperson expressed hope that the resumption of flights to European destinations will increase the value of the airline and facilitate the privatization process.
