Tuesday, December 10, 2024
Damascus (News InternationalNew - 10th December, 2024) The rebel group that overthrew the Bashar al-Assad government in Syria has started working on forming a government, while the rebel leader has indicated action against former military officers involved in the violence. According to the Arab Broadcasting Agency, Ahmed al-Shara, aka Abu Muhammad al-Julani, commander of the Syrian rebel group “Hayat Tahrir al-Sham”, met with Muhammad al-Jalali, who was the Prime Minister during the regime of Bashar al-Assad, and discussed the transfer of power.
According to the talks between the parties, Jalali said that the transfer of power could take several days. Al Jazeera reported that Mohammed al-Bashir will head the authority responsible for the transition of power, which is also the head of the “Salvation Government” established in the rebel stronghold in northwest Syria. The rebel alliance has not yet made any plans for the future of Syria, but rebel leaders have warned that officials from the Bashar al-Assad government will be punished for war crimes.
According to the report, rebel leader Abu Muhammad al-Julani has expressed his determination in a statement that those in the Bashar al-Assad government who committed violence and war crimes against the people will have to answer for it. He said that information about senior Syrian army officers and security officials involved in war crimes will be rewarded. Abu al-Julani said that the new government will bring back those military officers who have fled the country.
Meanwhile, Abu Muhammad al-Julani, the leader of the rebels who overthrew Bashar al-Assad, met with Syria's outgoing Prime Minister Muhammad al-Julani, who is said to have discussed the transfer of power. A statement posted by the rebels on Telegram channels said that Abu Muhammad al-Julani, who is now using his real name Ahmed al-Sharaa, met with Jalali to discuss a coordinated transfer of power to guarantee the delivery of services to the Syrian people. A short video released of the meeting also shows Muhammad al-Bashir, who is said to have been nominated to head the government. The report said that outgoing Prime Minister Jalali has agreed to hand over power to the rebels after meeting with rebel leaders in Damascus, but neither side has confirmed this. The rebel group Hayat al-Sham (HTS) held control of Idlib and some surrounding areas until November 27, when its allied factions launched an armed uprising against the government of Bashar al-Assad and began seizing areas controlled by the Damascus administration. The name of the head of the Salvation Government, Mohammed al-Bashir, is being floated as a possible candidate for prime minister in Syria's new interim administration. Rebel groups took control of major Syrian cities including Aleppo, Hama and Homs in just 10 days, and also captured Damascus on Sunday. President Bashar al-Assad fled the country with his family as the rebels approached Damascus.
In the video, rebel commander Jolani can be heard telling outgoing Prime Minister Jalili that although Idlib is a small area with limited resources, the authorities there have a high level of experience because they started from scratch. Jalali said that he was ready to cooperate with any leadership elected by the people and on any issue. It should be remembered that the Salvation Government was established in 2017, which has ministries and departments, and a functioning judicial and security system. After the rebels took control of Aleppo, Syria's second largest city, the authorities in the region have started to return to their work, especially officials and officers working in the water, electricity and communications sectors have returned to duty.
