Federal ministers assure exporters of government's support to address their concerns and ensure smooth operations for the sector

ISLAMABAD (News international / Pakistan News - NNI. 19th December, 2024) Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan and Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain held a crucial meeting with members of the Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP) to address the challenges faced by rice exporters. According to a statement issued by the ministry on Thursday, in the meeting, the federal ministers assured the exporters of the government’s support in addressing their concerns and ensuring smooth operations for the sector.

Federal Minister Jam Kamal Khan praised Pakistani rice exporters for maintaining their market position despite India’s reopening of rice exports and lifting of price controls.

He highlighted the performance of the sector, calling it a “growing industry” and a cornerstone of Pakistan’s export economy.

Rana Tanveer Hussain assured the exporters that the government would take immediate steps to resolve any legislative or compliance issues hindering exports. Jam Kamal Khan said that all export orders will be fulfilled by January 15, while the implementation of interim measures as well as the finalization of long-term legislation are being done. He said that new markets like Bangladesh are opening up for Pakistani rice, which further highlights the growth potential of the sector.

The REAP chairman said that the rice sector plays a significant role in Pakistan’s exports, especially in the European Union (EU) and the UK, where it has outpaced competitors including India. He expressed concerns about the recent pesticide compliance issue and sought government support to deal with it effectively.

The exporters stressed the need to strengthen the Department of Plant Protection (DPP) and also demanded an increase in its staff. Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan assured the REAP members that their issues would be addressed on priority basis. He said that all issues will be resolved immediately to ensure rice exports and the growth of the sector. With Pakistani rice breaking India’s market share in the European Union and emerging as a global leader in rice exports, the government and REAP members reiterated their commitment to strengthen the performance of the sector through collaborative efforts and targeted interventions.
