Islamabad (News International / Pakistan Point News - 12th Dec, 2024 ) :South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol on Thursday defended his decision to impose short-term martial law in the country, saying it was a move to protect the country’s democracy.
The president is currently under criminal investigation for alleged rebellion. He announced the imposition of martial law last week, saying he wanted to rid the country of “pro-North Korean forces.”
However, his move has plunged the country into a political crisis.
Parliamentary impeachment motion against South Korean president fails
Vows to ‘fight to the end’
In a televised address, President Yoon accused the opposition of trying to remove him from office.
"I will fight to the end to stop the forces and criminal groups that are responsible for paralyzing the country's government and disrupting the country's constitutional government to threaten the future of the Republic of Korea," he said.
He described the country's National Assembly as a monster that destroys the constitutional system of liberal democracy. The house is currently under the control of the largest opposition party, and the president condemned the "national crisis" in this regard.
"The opposition is now dancing with the daggers of chaos and claiming that the declaration of martial law was an act of rebellion," he said.
But was it really so?"
South Korea: Defense Minister resigns, presidential impeachment bid looms
His latest comments on Thursday were a stark contrast to his earlier statement, in which he apologized to the public, saying the martial law declaration had "shocked the people" and that he had handed over his presidency to his party.
His remarks came as Han Dong-hoon, leader of Yoon's own People's Power Party (PPP), said the president showed no signs of resigning and should be impeached.
What next after South Korea's failed martial law?
Second attempt to impeach the president
His remarks came just hours after the opposition Democratic Party (DPK) filed a new impeachment motion against the president.
The opposition's first attempt to impeach him failed last Saturday when the ruling party blocked the vote.
It should be noted that several of President Yoon's top officials have already been arrested or detained and are being questioned about their role in imposing martial law in the country.
South Korea: Martial law chaos and demands for the president's resignation
The country's former defense minister Kim Yong-hyun, who is believed to have played a key role in imposing martial law, has even attempted to take his own life while in custody.
South Korean authorities have also banned the president from traveling abroad and his office was searched as part of an investigation into last week's events.
