Sudan: More than 100 people killed in war, mostly civilians

 Wednesday, December 11, 2024

Islamabad (News International / Pakistan News - DW - 11 December 2024) At least 127 people have been killed in Sudan as a result of barrel bombs and shelling by the army and the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) across the country, most of them civilians.

At least 65 people were killed in shelling by paramilitary forces in the city on Tuesday, according to the governor of Madarmin state, which is allied with the government army.

Sudan: Worst food shortages and hunger spread to the capital

The pro-democracy group Emergency Lawyers said the attack came a day after an army airstrike on a market in the North Darfur town of Kabkabiya killed more than 100 people.

The two sides have been fighting each other since April 2023, with both groups targeting civilian areas indiscriminately as ceasefire efforts have stalled.

What did the Sudanese army and RSF say?

According to AFP, Khartoum Governor Ahmed Osman Hamza said a shell fired by the RSF hit a passenger bus, "killing all 22 people on board."

Meanwhile, according to the pro-democracy El-Fasher Resistance Committee, eight barrel bombs fell on a market in Kabkabiya.

The pro-democracy group Emergency Lawyers said of the attacks that "the airstrike occurred on the town's weekly market day, where residents of nearby villages had gathered to shop." "It resulted in more than 100 deaths and hundreds of injuries, including women and children."

The army currently controls parts of the capital, as well as the north and east of the country.

It frequently targets towns in North Darfur with airstrikes.

Iran and Sudan restore diplomatic ties after eight years

It is fighting the RSF for control of the capital of North Darfur state, El Fasher, its last stronghold in the region.

The army denied the latest attack on Kabkabiya but said it had the right to target any location for military purposes.

RSF did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Millions of civilians face famine

Tens of thousands of people have been killed and 12 million displaced in the 20-month war between the army and the RSF. Much of Khartoum has been destroyed and both sides are fighting for control of the region.

The United Nations has said the war has caused the worst humanitarian crisis in recent years. Meanwhile, a famine was declared in the Zamzam refugee camp in North Darfur, where shelling killed seven people living in the camp on Tuesday.
