Terrorism in and from Afghanistan is a serious threat, says Pakistani envoy Usman Jadoon

 Friday, December 13, 2024

United Nations (News International / Pakistan News - 13th December, 2024) Pakistan has warned the international community that the terrorist group Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), active in Afghanistan, could emerge as an arm of Al-Qaeda and destabilize the region with its regional and global terrorism agenda. Pakistan’s Acting Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Usman Jadoon, told the UN Security Council during a discussion on the situation in Afghanistan that terrorism within and from Afghanistan is the single most serious threat to the country, the region and the world.

He said that the Afghan interim government is fighting ISIS-Khorasan, the threat of Al-Qaeda, TTP and other terrorist groups like them is yet to be addressed.

The Pakistani delegate said that with its six thousand members, the TTP is a large and strong group that poses a direct and immediate threat to Pakistan’s security due to its safe havens along the Pakistani border.

The Pakistani envoy said that while countering the TTP’s cross-border operations, our security forces have seized some advanced weapons left behind by foreign forces stationed in Afghanistan. He said, without naming India, that the terrorist group also receives external support and funding from our adversaries. He said that the TTP is fast emerging as an umbrella organization for other terrorist groups, with the aim of destabilizing Afghanistan’s neighbors.

We have evidence of TTP’s collaboration with other terrorist groups like the Majeed Brigade, which are using terrorism against Pakistan’s economic cooperation with China, including the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Given its long association with al-Qaeda, the TTP could emerge as an arm of al-Qaeda with a regional and global terrorism agenda.

He expressed his determination that Pakistan would take all necessary national measures to eliminate these threats while cooperating with regional and international efforts to eradicate the menace of terrorism. The Pakistani delegate expressed the hope that the Afghan interim government would fulfill its declared commitments on human rights and political inclusion, including allowing women and girls to study in public and private medical institutions, as expected by the international community.

The Pakistani delegate said that instead of easing the restrictions already imposed on women, the Afghan interim government had imposed more restrictions on women and girls. He also called for the full implementation of the Doha Process Framework. He said that the challenges of Afghanistan, including terrorism, human rights and widespread poverty, were also affecting the region.

He said that the international community was committed to helping the 23.7 million Afghans, who were in urgent need of assistance. He said that substantial steps should be taken to strengthen the economy of Afghanistan, including the restoration of the national banking system and commercial activities. The Pakistani ambassador said that Pakistan has deep ethnic, historical, religious, linguistic and cultural ties with Afghanistan.

The suffering of our Afghan brothers and sisters has a profound impact on the Pakistani people. Pakistan is most eager for Afghanistan’s full inclusion in the international community. Earlier, opening the discussion on the situation in Afghanistan, Roza Otunbayeva, Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), said that she strongly urged a review of the latest restrictions on women in Afghanistan.

She said that the political decision-making of the Afghan authorities is increasingly becoming ambiguous, which poses risks to the stability of the country. She also mentioned this week’s suicide attack on the Afghan Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation. Stressing the need to restore ties with Afghan authorities in the interest of the Afghan people, he said that restoring ties is not about recognizing the interim government of Afghanistan, but rather preventing it from returning to violence.\932
