Islamabad (UrduPoint News International/ Pakistan Point News - 11th Jan, 2025 ) A 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck the Himalayan region on Tuesday morning, killing dozens and injuring dozens more, local media reported.
At least 53 people were killed in the Tibetan city of Shigatse and surrounding areas, local media reported, with tremors felt in neighboring Nepal and India.
“A reporter from the Tibet Autonomous Region Earthquake Bureau has received reports that people have died,” China’s official Xinhua news agency said, citing a list of Changsu, Qolo and Kogo townships in Dingri County.
The report added that the earthquake struck at 9:55 am local time, with a depth of 10 kilometers.
However, it said its magnitude was lower than the earlier estimate of 6.9.
Meanwhile, the US Geological Survey put the magnitude of the quake at 7.1.
Aftershock reports
The Xinhua reporter added that even after the strong quake, "multiple aftershocks" were still felt until 10 a.m., with a magnitude of 4.4.
State broadcaster CCTV reported that "strong tremors were felt in Dingri County and surrounding areas, and several buildings collapsed near the epicenter."
"The Ministry of Emergency Management said that about 1,500 emergency workers were already in the affected areas to search for victims and survivors buried in the rubble.
Reuters said that video footage it had seen of the quake showed cracks in damaged buildings and shops in major towns such as Xinjiang and Lhasa, while debris from the collapsed buildings was strewn across the streets.

“We felt a very strong earthquake but so far we have not received any reports of injuries or structural damage,” said Anuj Raj Ghumire, chief district officer of Nepal’s Solukhumbu district.
“We have mobilized police and other security forces as well as local people to collect information about the damage,” he added.
”Tremors were also felt in the eastern Indian state of Bihar, but authorities did not report any damage.
