Islamabad (UrduPoint News International/ Pakistan Point News - 10th Jan, 2025 ) The European Union's foreign affairs chief Kaia Kallas wrote on Twitter about war-torn Syria, a day after meeting with Western powers in Rome, "The EU could gradually ease sanctions, provided there is concrete progress."
The United States and Europe are trying to establish good relations with the new leadership in Syria after the ouster of President Bashar al-Assad.
The 27-nation European Union previously imposed broad sanctions on the Assad regime and the Syrian economy during the Syrian civil war.
Meanwhile, the new interim government in Damascus is also lobbying for the lifting of sanctions on the country. On the other hand, the international community is reluctant to lift sanctions.
Many countries are waiting to see how the new rulers in Damascus use their power.
The Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, led by Syria’s new de facto leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, dominates the current government and is formally subject to EU sanctions.
Germany has already begun pressing the EU to ease sanctions on Syria, with the German foreign minister visiting Damascus last week with his French counterpart.
Diplomats say Berlin is pushing for the government to ease financial transactions with Syria, ease restrictions on private capital transfers and possibly lift sanctions on the energy and aviation sectors.
EU foreign ministers are expected to discuss the proposals at a meeting in Brussels on January 27, which would require the support of all member states for any changes.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani is the latest high-ranking EU official to visit Syria on Friday and is expected to announce an initial development aid package.
At a meeting in Rome on Thursday, the foreign ministers of the United States, Britain, France, Germany and Italy also agreed on the need to encourage stability in Syria.
On the other hand, Syrian Foreign Minister Assad Hassan al-Shaibani said on Friday that he would also visit European countries in the coming days.
