Islamabad (UrduPoint news international/ Pakistan Point News - 11th Jan, 2025 ) According to reports received from the European Union headquarters in Brussels, the Belgian capital, on Wednesday, January 8, the General Court of the European Union ordered in a decision that the European Union Commission pay a fine of 400 euros to a German user.

The German citizen, who was also the plaintiff in the case, had alleged that the European Commission itself had violated the regulations imposed by the European Commission regarding the protection of the personal data of ordinary citizens in this bloc.

Plaintiff’s personal data transferred to the US
The applicant had claimed that the European Commission had transferred his personal data to the US without adequate safeguards, infringing on his rights under EU data protection rules.
During the trial, the court concluded on the basis of the evidence that the European Commission had itself breached the European Data Protection Regulation it had implemented.
Uber fined heavily for alleged breach of data protection rules
The court ordered the European Commission to pay the German citizen concerned a fine of 400 euros (equivalent to 412 US dollars) in financial compensation.
Importantly, although the fine is only 400 euros, it is a landmark and the first court decision of its kind because it has never been done before.
What prompted the case?
The plaintiff in the case used the “Sign in with Facebook” button on the EU website to register for an EU conference.
The IP address of the German citizen’s digital device was thus transferred to various platforms of Facebook’s parent company Meta in the US. According to the General Court of the EU, in doing so, the European Commission had violated its own rules.

The General Court is a general court of the European Union that hears legal actions against various departments and institutions of the EU.
The EU’s General Data Protection Regulation, or GDPR, is considered one of the world’s strictest and most comprehensive regulations for protecting the privacy of ordinary users.
