ISLAMABAD (News / Pakistan Point News - DW Urdu - January 15, 2025) An Egyptian militant who supported Syrian fighters to overthrow the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has been detained by Syrian authorities on charges of threatening the Cairo government.

According to a report by the Reuters news agency received from Damascus, the current Syrian authorities have detained an Egyptian militant who fought alongside forces fighting against the government of Bashar al-Assad.

The Egyptian militant threatened the Cairo government on social media. This was reported by the Syrian Ministry of Interior and Arab security sources.

Syrian rebels enter Damascus, President Assad flees the country

This move by the new Syrian authorities will help ease the Cairo government’s concerns about Hayat Tahrir al-Sham.

The Egyptian government has been involved in a tough crackdown on the Islamist group Muslim Brotherhood.

Why was the Egyptian militant detained?

Egyptian militant Ahmed Al-Mansour posted a video on social media this week, in which he threatened the Cairo government, saying that “Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi will have the same fate as former Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad.”

According to sources, Ahmed Al-Mansour was arrested for this video and other posts and is being held in a detention center in Syria.

Arab League decides to restore Syria’s membership after 12 years

In Egypt, where most government officials in Cairo expressed strong support for the Syrian people in their statements, Egyptian state media criticized the change of power in Damascus and expressed serious concerns about the possible encouragement of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and any possible increase in its power by the Syrian government that came to power under the leadership of Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham.

Signs of Syria's return to the Arab League are evident

According to Arab broadcasters, the arrest was a "message" from the new Syrian rulers to the Egyptian government.

Syrian Foreign Minister's Important Message About Syrian Refugees

Asad al-Shaibani, the de facto Foreign Minister of the Syrian interim government, has said that there is no need for Syrian refugees in Germany to return to their country soon.

Al-Shaibani, speaking to DPA in Damascus, said, "There is no need for Syrian refugees living in Germany to return home soon because they are safe there."

Almost a quarter of a million Syrians live in Germany, most of whom came to Germany as refugees during the more than decade-long Syrian civil war and bloodshed.

The Arabs are embracing Assad, will this help ordinary Syrians?

It should be noted that German Interior Minister Nancy Pfizer has suggested to Syrian refugees living in Germany that they should return to their country once, assess the situation there and then decide for themselves. At the same time, the German minister also assured that the return of Syrian refugees to their country will not affect their refugee status. That status will remain safe.
