Negotiations are in the final stages and an agreement is possible within hours, days or more. Israeli officials

Tuesday, January 14, 2025

Tel Aviv (News International / Latest News - International Press Agency. January 14, 2025) A Palestinian official involved in the negotiating team between Israel and Hamas has said that the terms of the agreement on a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages are being finalized between the parties, while US President Joe Biden says that the agreement between the parties is at a critical juncture where it has a strong possibility of being fruitful, and the US administration is also focused on this issue.

According to the British Broadcasting Corporation, an Israeli official said that the negotiations are in the final stages and an agreement is possible in hours, days or more. US President Joe Biden spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Qatari Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani two days ago. The Palestinian official said that Hamas and Israeli officials were holding indirect talks in the same building.

Giving some possible details of the deal, the Palestinian official said that detailed technical talks took a long time. The parties agreed that Hamas would release three hostages on the first day of the deal, after which Israel would begin withdrawing its troops from populated areas. Seven days later, Hamas would release four more hostages and Israel would allow displaced people in the southern areas to return to the north, but only by the coastal route and that too on foot. However, transportation would be allowed to pass through a route adjacent to the Salah al-Din Road, which would be monitored by a Qatari and Egyptian technical security team.

The agreement includes provisions for Israeli forces to remain in the Philadelphia Corridor and to maintain an 800-meter buffer zone along the eastern and northern borders during the first phase, which will last 42 days. Israel has also agreed to release 1,000 Palestinian prisoners, about 190 of whom have served sentences of 15 years or more, in exchange for Hamas releasing 34 hostages.

Negotiations for the second and third phases of the agreement will begin on the 16th day of the ceasefire. Gaza's Civil Defense Agency said more than 50 people were killed in Israeli air strikes on Gaza City yesterday. Civil Defense spokesman Mahmoud Bassil said they also bombed schools, homes and even gatherings of people, but the Israeli military said it was reviewing the reports. Israel said five Israeli soldiers were killed in the northern Gaza Strip on Monday.
