Islamabad (News/ Pakistan Point News - 16th January, 2025) The Gaza ceasefire agreement brokered by the US, Egypt and Qatar was announced on Wednesday night. The deal is set to take effect on Sunday, while Israel will formally approve it through the ratification of the country's security cabinet. However, 77 people were killed in Israeli airstrikes in Gaza last night after the deal was announced.
Under the deal, a ceasefire is to be implemented initially for six weeks, during which Israeli troops are to be gradually withdrawn from Gaza and Israeli citizens held hostage by Hamas are to be released in exchange for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons.
The deal is expected to accelerate the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
In this context, hundreds of aid trucks are waiting to enter Gaza in the Al-Arish area on the Egyptian border with Gaza.
Israel has not yet formally accepted the deal
The formal ratification of the deal by Israel is subject to approval by the security cabinet. The cabinet meeting was scheduled for Thursday, but Prime Minister Netanyahu has postponed the meeting, accusing Hamas of violating the agreement.
According to a statement issued by Netanyahu's office, "The Israeli cabinet meeting will not take place until the mediators officially inform Israel that Hamas accepts all the points of the agreement."
On the other hand, a senior Hamas official, Izzat al-Rashiq, said that his organization is committed to implementing the ceasefire agreement announced on Wednesday.
It is being said that Prime Minister Netanyahu's government is in favor of blocking the agreement, but most of his cabinet ministers are expected to approve the deal.
Russia hopes ceasefire will bring stability
Russia has welcomed the Gaza ceasefire agreement and said it hopes the deal will bring stability to the region.
According to Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, “The ceasefire deal is a very important step towards reducing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and tensions in the region and towards long-term stability.”
However, Russia has expressed caution over the Israeli cabinet’s failure to approve the deal. According to the Russian statement, Moscow is looking forward to further developments in this regard.
