Washington (News International- 25 January 2025) Hundreds of illegal immigrants were arrested in the United States and hundreds were sent out of the country by military aircraft. The White House said that the deportation operation promised by President Donald Trump has begun. White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt said that the Trump administration arrested 538 illegal immigrant criminals and hundreds of people were deported by military aircraft.
He said in a post on the social media platform “X” that the largest deportation operation in history is well underway. Trump pledged to crack down on illegal immigrants during his election campaign and has begun his second term with orders aimed at reforming the system of entry into the United States. On his first day in office, Trump signed orders declaring a national emergency at the southern border and vowed to deport “criminal aliens” and announced the deployment of more troops to the area.
Democratic Mayor of Newark, New Jersey, Ross Baraka said in a statement that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents raided a local facility and detained undocumented residents as well as citizens without showing a warrant. ICE announced 538 arrests and 373 detainees in a recent post on the social media platform X.
ICE detains non-U.S. citizens who are arrested on criminal charges and who the agency believes may be subject to deportation under the law. Baraka said one of the people detained during the raid was a former U.S. soldier. ICE did not respond to a request for comment.
A spokeswoman for the U.N. rights office said in Geneva that while countries have the right to exercise jurisdiction along their international borders, they should remember that the right to seek asylum is a universally recognized human right. According to the Department of Homeland Security, about 11 million immigrants in the United States lack legal documentation. The roundup came as Trump was preparing to travel to California and North Carolina on his first domestic trip since returning to office, where natural disasters have become a political issue.
