India: Journalist's body recovered from septic tank, alleged killer arrested

ISLAMABAD (UrduPoint News International/ Pakistan Point News - 1st Jan, 2025 ) The body of Indian journalist Mukesh Chandrakar was found in a septic tank in Chhattisgarh state after he went missing on the first day of the new year.


Police said his body bore signs of severe injuries. His body was found in a septic tank in the premises of a road construction contractor in Bijapur on Friday.


The journalist’s post-mortem revealed the gruesome nature of the murder, with the victim suffering from 15 fractures to his head, a broken neck and a torn heart.

The doctors who conducted the post-mortem of the 28-year-old journalist said they found four pieces of liver, five broken ribs, 15 fractures to his head, a broken neck and a torn heart.


They said they had never seen such an incident in their 12-year career.


Chandrakar had reported on corruption and the Maoist insurgency in the mineral-rich state and ran the popular YouTube channel "Bastar Junction".


Alleged prime suspect arrested

The suspect who planned the murder of journalist Mukesh Chandrakar was arrested in Hyderabad on Sunday night, police said.


Suresh Chandrakar, a distant relative of the journalist and a contractor, is believed to be the mastermind behind the murder. He had been missing since the murder was revealed.

According to police, Suresh Chandrakar was hiding in his driver's house in Hyderabad. To trace him, police reviewed footage from 200 CCTVs and checked nearly 300 mobile numbers.


Police are currently questioning him, officials said. Four bank accounts linked to Suresh Chandrakar were earlier frozen. Three people have already been arrested.


Chandrakar's death probe

There have been protests in various parts of the country against Chandrakar's murder.


Chhattisgarh Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma said that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to probe Mukesh's death.


The suspected prime accused is said to have political connections, but according to Indian media, both the Congress Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have denied that he is a member of them.


India: Hopes for the journalist community from the opposition


Journalists have protested, demanding strict action against the alleged culprits.


The Press Council of India has sought a report from the state government on the "facts of the case".


Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, who belongs to the ruling BJP, described Chandrakar's death as "heartbreaking" and promised "strictest punishment" to those responsible.

The Indian Journalists Union and its affiliate National Union of Journalists strongly condemned the killing and called on the authorities to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.


Press Freedom Day and threats to journalism worldwide


The Press Association, Editors Guild of India, Press Club of India, Delhi Union of Journalists and other journalist organisations also condemned the incident and urged the Chhattisgarh government to take steps to protect journalists, especially those involved in field reporting and investigative journalism.


India was ranked 159th last year in the World Press Freedom Index conducted by Reporters Without Borders.
