Lebanon's army chief elected as country's new president

 Thursday, January 9, 2025

Islamabad (UrduPoint News / Pakistan Point News - 9th January, 2025 ) Lebanon's army chief Joseph Aoun was elected president on Thursday, January 9. The move marks a shift in the balance of power in the region and suggests that the Iranian-backed Hezbollah group has been weakened after a devastating war with Israel.

The move also signals a resurgence of Saudi influence in a country where Riyadh's role was long limited by Iran and Hezbollah.

The post of president, reserved for a Maronite Christian in Lebanon's sectarian power-sharing system, has been vacant since Michel Aoun's term ended in October 2022. The 128-seat parliament, divided by factions, has been unable to agree on a candidate who can garner enough votes.

Joseph Aoun fell short of the required 86 votes in the first round of voting but managed to secure 99 votes in the second round.

According to parliament speaker Nabih Berri, Joseph Aoun secured the post only after votes from lawmakers from Hezbollah and its Shiite ally Amal Movement. Aoun emerged as the strong candidate on Wednesday after Hezbollah’s long-time preferred candidate, Suleiman Franjieh, announced his withdrawal in support of the army commander.

Three Lebanese political sources told Reuters that French and Saudi envoys had been active in Beirut earlier and had urged Aoun to be elected in meetings with politicians.

Sources close to the Saudi royal court said that French, Saudi and US envoys had told Hezbollah’s close ally and parliament speaker Nabih Berri that future international and Saudi financial aid depended on Aoun’s election.

Michel Mouawad, an anti-Hezbollah Christian lawmaker who voted for Aoun, said there was a clear message from the international community that it was ready to support Lebanon but that it needed a president and a functioning government. He added that he had received a message of support from Saudi Arabia before voting.

Aoun played a key role in brokering a ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel in November, brokered by Washington and Paris. Aoun, 60, has been commander of the US-backed Lebanese army since 2017.
