Rawalpindi (UrduPoint News International- 02 January 2025) The pardon of 19 criminals involved in the May 9 tragedy has been announced. The criminals filed mercy and pardon petitions using their legal rights. A total of 67 criminals had filed mercy petitions. According to the Pakistan Army spokesperson, 48 petitions were sent to the Courts of Appeal for review for legal action. The petitions of 19 criminals were approved in accordance with the law on purely humanitarian grounds.
Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said that during the execution of the sentences of the May 9 incident, the convicts had filed mercy and pardon petitions. The other mercy petitions will be implemented within the stipulated time as per the law. The Pakistan Army spokesperson further said that the 19 convicts whose sentences have been pardoned include Muhammad Ayaz son of Sahibzada Khan, Samiullah son of Mirdad Khan, Laiq Ahmed son of Manzoor Ahmed, Amjad Ali son of Manzoor Ahmed, Yasir Nawaz son of Amir Nawaz Khan, Saeed Alam son of Muazullah Khan, Zahid Khan son of Muhammad Nabi, Muhammad Suleman son of Saeed Ghani Jan, Hamza Sharif son of Muhammad Azam, Muhammad Salman son of Zahid Nisar, Ashhar Butt son of Muhammad Arshad Butt, Muhammad Waqas son of Malik Muhammad Khalil, Sufyan Idris son of Idris Ahmed, Munib Ahmed son of Naveed Ahmed Butt, Muhammad Ahmed son of Muhammad Nazir, Muhammad Nawaz son of Abdul Samad, Muhammad Ali son of Muhammad Buta, Muhammad Bilawal son of Manzoor Hussain, Muhammad Ilyas son of Muhammad Fazal Haleem.
Samiullah son of Mir Dad Khan, involved in the Bannu Cantt attack, was sentenced to 2 years of rigorous imprisonment, while Muhammad Ayaz son of Sahibzada Khan, involved in the FC Cantt Peshawar attack, was sentenced to 2 years of rigorous imprisonment. ISPI also says that all these criminals are being released after the completion of the procedural proceedings, while all other criminals also have the right to appeal and other legal rights as per the law and constitution.
ISPI also says that the remission of sentences is a proof of our fair legal process and the strength of justice. This system ensures the delivery of justice by keeping in mind the principles of compassion and mercy. Earlier, in April 2024, an order was issued to release 20 criminals on humanitarian grounds as per the law. It may be recalled that earlier, military courts had sentenced PTI workers involved in the violent incidents of May 9, 2023.
Military Court Sentences May 9 Tragedy Criminals Sentenced by Military Courts. The Field General Martial Court had sentenced 25 suspects in the first phase. According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the criminals involved in the May 9 tragedy were sentenced by military courts. Later, military courts sentenced 60 more criminals, including Hassan Niazi, nephew of PTI founder Imran Khan, involved in the May 9, 2023 tragedy.

According to the statement, the Field General Court Martial had sentenced all the evidence, ensured legal rights to the criminals, and acted in accordance with legal requirements.
According to the ISPR, the 60 convicted criminals included Hassan Khan Niazi, son of Hafizullah Niazi, involved in the Jinnah House attack, who was sentenced to 10 years in prison. The Pakistan Army spokesperson had said that along with this, the trial of the cases of the May 9 suspects taken into military custody had been completed under the relevant laws. The ISPR also said that all the criminals have the right to appeal and other legal rights, as guaranteed in the constitution and law. The nation, the government and the armed forces were steadfast in their determination to uphold justice and the inviolable writ of the state.
