New York (UrduPoint News International- 03 January 2025) Pakistan has assumed its responsibilities as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. The Pakistani flag was hoisted in the Security Council. Pakistan began a 2-year term as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. A ceremony was held at the United Nations to assume the responsibilities of the non-permanent members of the Security Council, in which Pakistan’s representative Asim Iftikhar participated in the ceremony of hoisting the flag of the non-permanent members of the Security Council.
Pakistan will fulfill its responsibilities for two years, while the flags of other non-permanent members Denmark, Greece, Panama and Somalia were also hoisted. Pakistan has been elected as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the eighth time and achieved this status by securing 182 votes out of 193 member states.
On this occasion, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Munir Akram, said that Pakistan will play an active and constructive role in addressing global challenges as a non-permanent member of the Security Council.
The overall security situation in Pakistan is very good. Pakistan is a strong country. Our nation is united. Afghanistan is constantly discussed in the Security Council. Pakistan’s Additional Permanent Representative to the Security Council, Asim Iftikhar, said that our position regarding Afghanistan is very clear, we want a peaceful and stable Afghanistan. Pakistan has been elected as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the eighth time.
In June last year, Pakistan received 182 votes out of 193 member states of the United Nations General Assembly. The Security Council consists of 5 permanent and 10 non-permanent members. The permanent members include the United States, Britain, Russia, China and France. The term of the non-permanent members is two years and their electoral responsibility is to provide assistance in making decisions on important issues of international peace and security.
It should be noted that earlier, Pakistan had joined the non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council. Pakistan’s two-year term began on January 1. Pakistan was elected as a non-permanent member of the Security Council last year. In the voting held last year, Pakistan replaced Japan in the Asian seat. Pakistan received 182 votes from the 193 member states of the General Assembly.
