Swiss citizen allegedly commits suicide in Iranian prison

ISLAMABAD (UrduPoint News International/ Pakistan Point News - 10th Jan, 2025 ) A Swiss national detained in Iran on charges of espionage committed suicide in prison on Thursday, Mezan News Agency reported, quoting the chief justice of Iran’s Semnan province. The Swiss national was being held in a prison in Semnan, about 180 kilometers east of Tehran.
“This morning, a Swiss national committed suicide in Semnan prison,” Mezan quoted Mohammad Seddiq Akbari, head of the province’s justice department, as saying.
The Swiss national was arrested by security agencies on charges of espionage… and his case is being investigated.”

“Efforts to save this man failed,” Mezan quoted Seddiq Akbari as saying.
The news of the Swiss national’s death came a day after the release of an Italian national from an Iranian prison.
However, the identity of the deceased prisoner was not disclosed.
Swiss authorities in contact with Iran
The Swiss Foreign Affairs Department (FDFA) confirmed the death of its citizen in an email. The FDFA said its embassy in Tehran is in contact with local authorities to find out what really happened.

“The Swiss embassy in Tehran is in contact with local authorities to clarify the circumstances of the death in Iranian prison,” FDFA spokesman Pierre-Alain Eltschinger wrote in an email.
Switzerland plays a key role in the US-Iranian diplomatic crisis.
The central European country has been a key mediator for Washington since the US severed diplomatic relations with Tehran in support of the 1979 Iranian revolution and hostage crisis.
