Islamabad (News / Pakistan Point News - 28th January, 2025 ) US President Donald Trump spoke to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday for the first time since taking office, discussing bilateral trade and Modi’s possible state visit to Washington.
The White House said in a statement that Trump stressed the importance of “moving towards a fair bilateral trade relationship” as well as the importance of India purchasing American-made security equipment.
The two leaders also reportedly discussed Modi’s plans for an upcoming visit to the White House.
Later, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a statement on social media, “We are committed to a mutually beneficial and trusting partnership.
We will work together for the well-being of our people and for global peace, prosperity and security.

The US President also revealed that Prime Minister Modi is expected to visit the US sometime in February, although the Indian Ministry of External Affairs has not yet confirmed this.
Closeness between Modi and Trump
Indian Prime Minister Modi was among the first world leaders to congratulate Trump on his re-election and Modi addressed him as a “dear friend” immediately after his recent swearing-in.
During Trump's first term, Modi also stressed his desire to work with the American leader for the benefit of both countries.
In September 2019, the two demonstrated their friendship by holding a "Howdy Modi" event in Houston, where they both addressed an audience of about 50,000 Indian-Americans.

What are the common US-India interests?
US-India relations have grown under the administrations of several US presidents, as both democratic governments have made it their shared goal to counter growing Chinese influence in the Indo-Pacific region.
Observers believe that this common interest means that security ties will remain strong.

Trade, however, could prove to be a different matter, as Trump has been willing to use tariffs as a foreign policy tool.
“Trump has previously labelled India a ‘tariff king’ and if re-elected, he intends to implement a reciprocal tax system, which could further complicate the trade dynamics between the two countries,” Indian foreign policy expert C Rajamohan told DW in an interview before last year’s US elections.
‘’
“Trump’s second term now marks a complicated set-up for India, with trade and immigration facing huge risks,” Rajamohan said.

Annual bilateral trade between the two countries is worth more than $190 billion. The US is also India's largest export market for goods and services.
If Trump imposes new and larger tariffs on Indian exports to the US, it could cause domestic trade problems for India.
