ISLAMABAD (UrduPoint news international/ Pakistan Point News - 11th Jan, 2025 ) Justin Trudeau announced his resignation on Monday under pressure from the ruling Liberal Party amid growing unpopularity. Canada: Trudeau may announce resignation this week, report
President-elect Donald Trump, who did not have a good relationship with Trudeau during his first term from 2017-2021, has been touting the idea of making Canada the 51st state of the United States since he met Trudeau at Mar-a-Lago on November 5. He has mentioned it several times in his social media posts since the meeting.
"Many people in Canada would love to be the 51st state," Trump said on his social media platform Truth Social. "The United States can no longer afford the huge trade deficits and subsidies that Canada needs to maintain. Justin Trudeau knew this, and he resigned."

After Trudeau's resignation on Monday, the US president-elect said, "If Canada were to merge with the United States, there would be no tariffs, taxes would be greatly reduced, and they would be completely safe from the threat of Russian and Chinese ships that are constantly surrounding them.
Together, what a great nation that would be!!!"
There has been no response from Canada to Trump's proposal.
Trump threatened to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian imports if Toronto fails to stem the flow of illegal drugs and illegal immigrants across its southern border with the United States.
In some posts, Trump has also mocked Trudeau, calling him “the governor of the great country of Canada.”

At a packed press conference in Ottawa, the 53-year-old leader outlined his achievements, challenges, and one regret, which he said still haunts him as the country approaches its next general election this year.
"I have one regret, especially as we approach this election — well, there are probably many regrets that I would think about," Trudeau said. "But I wish we could change the way we elect our governments in this country so that people could easily choose a second choice, or a third on the same ballot paper."

Trudeau's resignation comes at a time when the Liberal Party's credibility is waning. It faces internal divisions and the growing popularity of the Conservative opposition led by Pierre Pollari ahead of the election.
Trudeau acknowledged that the challenges facing his party and his leadership are extraordinary as Canada prepares for a crucial election later this year.
"This country deserves a real choice in the next election, and it has become clear to me that if I have to fight internal battles, I may not be the best option in that election," Trudeau said.
