Islamabad (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 19th January, 2025 ) The ceasefire deal in the Gaza war, which came into effect on Sunday, 19th January, did not specify how many Palestinian prisoners would be released from Israeli prisons in exchange for the release of the Israeli hostages held by Hamas. One reason for this is that it is also unclear how many Israeli hostages are still alive and how many have been killed in Hamas custody.
Gaza War: Key Points of the Proposed Ceasefire Agreement
As for the current total number of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons, it is 10,400. This number does not include Palestinians who were arrested by the Israeli army during the Gaza war over the past 15 months.
This number of Palestinians in Israeli prisons has been confirmed by both the Society for Palestinian Prisoners and the Palestinian Commission for Prisoners' Affairs.
A key question is who are the most prominent Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails that Hamas would like Israel to release in exchange for the release of Israeli hostages.
Prominent Palestinian prisoners affiliated with Hamas

The longest-serving Palestinian in prison in Israel has finally been released
Marwan Barghouti is considered the leader and organizer of both major Palestinian resistance movements known as the Intifada. He was arrested in 2002.
