Who are the most prominent Palestinians imprisoned in Israeli prisons?

 Sunday, January 19, 2025

Islamabad (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 19th January, 2025 ) The ceasefire deal in the Gaza war, which came into effect on Sunday, 19th January, did not specify how many Palestinian prisoners would be released from Israeli prisons in exchange for the release of the Israeli hostages held by Hamas. One reason for this is that it is also unclear how many Israeli hostages are still alive and how many have been killed in Hamas custody.

Gaza War: Key Points of the Proposed Ceasefire Agreement

As for the current total number of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons, it is 10,400. This number does not include Palestinians who were arrested by the Israeli army during the Gaza war over the past 15 months.

This number of Palestinians in Israeli prisons has been confirmed by both the Society for Palestinian Prisoners and the Palestinian Commission for Prisoners' Affairs.

A key question is who are the most prominent Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails that Hamas would like Israel to release in exchange for the release of Israeli hostages.

Prominent Palestinian prisoners affiliated with Hamas

Abdullah Barghouti

Abdullah Barghouti was sentenced to 67 life sentences in 2004.

An Israeli military court convicted him of involvement in multiple suicide bombings in 2001 and 2002 that killed dozens of Israelis.

Abdullah Barghouti is a father of three and was born in Kuwait in 1972. In 1996, he and his family settled in a village on the outskirts of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank.

Ibrahim Hamid

Ibrahim Hamid was arrested in Ramallah in 2006 and sentenced to a total of 54 life sentences for planning multiple suicide bombings that killed dozens of Israeli civilians.

Ibrahim Hamid had been on Israel’s most wanted list for eight years before his arrest.

Hamid was a top commander of the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas’s military wing, in the occupied Palestinian territory of the West Bank. He holds a degree in political science from Ramallah University.

Nael Barghouti

Born in 1957, Nael Barghouti has spent 44 years in Israeli prisons, two-thirds of his 67-year life.

No other Palestinian prisoner has spent more time in Israeli prisons. He is also known as the “Dean” of Palestinian prisoners.

Freed Palestinian prisoners accuse Israel of violence

Nayel Barghouti was first sentenced to prison in 1978 for taking part in an attack that killed an Israeli soldier in Jerusalem.

When Nayel Barghouti was sentenced to life in prison in 1978, he was a member of the armed wing of Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement. He was later released along with about 1,000 Palestinians in exchange for the release of a hostage Israeli soldier. During this time, he joined Hamas, which was founded in 1987.

Hassan Salameh

Born in a refugee camp in the Gaza Strip city of Khan Younis in 1971, Hassan Salameh was convicted by an Israeli court in 1996 of being an accomplice in a series of suicide bombings that killed dozens of Israelis in Israel.

He was sentenced to 48 life sentences. Salama was arrested in the West Bank city of Hebron in 1996.

Prominent Palestinian prisoners who are not affiliated with Hamas

Marwan Barghouti, Fatah Movement

There are also many prominent Palestinians who are not affiliated with Hamas in Israeli prisons. One of them is Marwan Barghouti, a prominent leader of the Palestinian Fatah movement, who is also considered a possible successor to current Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

The longest-serving Palestinian in prison in Israel has finally been released

Marwan Barghouti is considered the leader and organizer of both major Palestinian resistance movements known as the Intifada. He was arrested in 2002.

According to officials in the Palestinian Fatah movement, during Yasser Arafat's lifetime, Marwan Barghouti founded the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades on the orders of Yasser Arafat himself, as the military wing of his Fatah movement.

Ahmed Saadat, PFLP

Ahmed Saadat is the leader of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, or PFLP, and is accused by Israel of ordering the assassination of Israeli Tourism Minister Rehavam in 2001.

Saadat was arrested by the Israeli military in 2006 and then tried in a military court. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison in 2008.
