Islamabad (News / Pakistan Point News - APP - 02 February 2025) An international health conference will be held in Islamabad from 17 to 19 February. The conference is titled “Transforming Global Health, Tackling Neglected Diseases through Training and Research” and is organized by COMSTEC in collaboration with the Organization for Educational, Scientific and Cultural Cooperation of the Islamic World (ICESCO), whose leading partners include the Global Network for Infectious Tropical Diseases (UK), the Centre de Virologie de Meldez Infectiouses et Tropics (CVMIT) and the Association of Physicians of Pakistani Origin in North America (APNA).

According to COMSTEC officials, the event aims to address the growing burden of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) through innovative approaches, training and international cooperation.

NTDs include leishmaniasis, ascariasis and trachoma. These diseases disproportionately affect poor and underserved populations, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions, posing serious health, social and economic challenges that are often overlooked in global health priorities.

The prevalence of these diseases in South Asia and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) regions is exacerbated by overcrowded refugee camps, areas with poor sanitation, water scarcity, urban slums and weak health care systems. The conference aims to address these challenges by equipping participants with the latest tools and approaches to combat health inequalities.

The three-day event will feature expert-led panel discussions, training sessions and keynote addresses by leading scientists, health care professionals and policymakers. 50 participants, including 25 international delegates and 25 local participants from North Africa (Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria and Libya) and other ICESCO member countries, will participate in information exchange sessions.

The conference aims to promote multinational collaboration, research opportunities and propose sustainable solutions to neglected diseases. Key objectives include raising awareness about NTDs, improving primary health care, promoting vector control and encouraging the development of new technologies and treatments. Through building networks and partnerships, the event aims to encourage transformative changes in the fight against NTDs and ensure equitable access to healthcare in vulnerable areas.

The conference will be hosted in a hybrid format, allowing for widespread participation through online platforms. Participants can find information on the official social media platforms of COMSTEC and ICESCO for registration and additional details. This joint initiative will highlight the urgent need for global action to combat NTDs and the critical role of research, training and partnerships in addressing one of the most important health challenges of our time.
