London (News / Pakistan Point News - NNI. 01 February 2025) Britain's Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has said that the first amount of the new refugee fund launched by the club will be given to exiled female cricketers from Afghanistan. According to foreign media reports, hundreds of players left Afghanistan and moved to other countries after the Taliban returned to power in 2021 and imposed various restrictions on women in the country.
Most of the 25 Afghan women who were contracted by the Afghan Cricket Board in 2020 have moved to Australia, where they played their first match yesterday. The MCC's global refugee cricket fund initially aims to raise one million pounds ($1.024 million), with the aim of spending the money on displaced communities like the Afghan players.
MCC secretary Rob Lynch said in a statement that cricket has the power to inspire, unite and empower and through this initiative we aim to create hope and opportunity for those who need it most. Although Afghanistan has a men's team and receives funding from the International Cricket Council, despite the players' requests, women have not been funded or approved by the international body.
The Taliban say they respect women's rights according to their interpretation of Islamic law and local customs and that these are internal matters that should be resolved at the national level. The MCC, which is the club responsible for making cricket laws, said in a statement that the funds raised in connection with Panah Green would be prioritized to provide safe training facilities, educational opportunities and development pathways.
The England and Wales Cricket Board has also supported the club. The ECB’s deputy chief executive said the cricket community must take action to support the brave Afghan women and create hope that cricket can be a game for every woman or girl. He said we hope the launch of the fund will encourage other cricket organisations to support this cause and realise the power of cricket to unite communities around the world.
