New Delhi state elections, Modi's party ahead

 Saturday, February 8, 2025

ISLAMABAD (Point News Today/ Pakistan Point News - 11th Feb, 2025 ) : Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won 40 seats in the 70-member Delhi Assembly, ousting the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which had ruled Delhi since 2015. The AAP won 17 seats, while counting is underway for the remaining 13 seats. This is the first time in 25 years that the BJP has won a lead in Delhi.

In a major political setback, AAP founder and senior leader Arvind Kejriwal and his deputy Manish Sisodia lost their seats, even though their party had won widespread public support due to its welfare policies and anti-corruption campaign.

As the results began to come in, BJP supporters gathered outside the party headquarters, waving party flags, Modi's pictures and celebrating.

Most public opinion polls had already predicted a BJP victory.

Indian Home Minister and BJP leader Amit Shah said in a statement that his party’s victory showed, “The people cannot be misled by lies every time.”

“Our victory is a sign of people’s faith in Prime Minister Modi’s vision of development,” he added.

More than 60 percent of the more than 1.5 crore eligible voters cast their votes in the local government elections on Wednesday.

The BJP’s victory on Saturday is being hailed as a major achievement for it, as the party failed to secure a majority on its own in last year’s national elections and had to form governments with allies. However, the BJP regained lost political ground by winning state elections in Haryana and Maharashtra.

Ahead of those elections, Modi’s party had introduced a welcome income tax cut for the salaried middle class in the federal budget.

During the election campaign, both Modi and Kejriwal promised to improve government schools, provide free healthcare, provide free electricity and provide a monthly stipend of 2,000 rupees (about $25) to poor women.

Kejriwal was arrested last year along with two other key party leaders on charges of taking a bribe from a liquor distributor.

He has dismissed the charges as a political conspiracy.

India’s Supreme Court granted bail to Kejriwal and other ministers, after which Kejriwal handed over the chief ministership to his senior leader Atishi, who won her seat on Saturday.

Opposition parties condemned Kejriwal’s arrest, accusing the Modi government of misusing federal investigative agencies to harass and weaken political opponents.

He pointed to the numerous raids, arrests and corruption investigations of opposition leaders ahead of national elections.

Kejriwal founded the Aam Aadmi Party in 2012, which has successfully transformed public anger against corruption into political power. His pro-people policies include improving government schools, providing affordable electricity, free healthcare, and free bus travel for women.

In the 2020 state elections, the Aam Aadmi Party won a landslide victory, winning 62 of the 70 seats, while the BJP won just eight and the Congress failed to win any.

The BJP was ousted from power in Delhi in 1998 by the Congress, which had ruled the state for 15 years.
