Islamabad (News / Pakistan Point News - 15th Feb, 2025 ) Abbas Araqchi, while talking to media representatives after the cabinet meeting, said, “I think that maximum pressure is a failed experiment and trying it again will prove to be another failure.” He also said on this occasion that Iran is not making any attempt to develop nuclear weapons.
Iran engaged in nuclear talks with European powers
There has been no contact between Iran and the US since Trump’s return, Iran
During his first term in office, which ended in 2021, US President Donald Trump, along with withdrawing from the nuclear deal reached between Iran and the international community, adopted a policy of ‘maximum pressure’ against Iran and reinstated strict sanctions against it.
Under the Iran nuclear deal, known as the ‘Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action’, sanctions on Iran’s nuclear program were eased in exchange for sanctions relief.
Tehran continued to implement the deal for a year after Washington unilaterally announced its withdrawal from the deal, but then it too began to backtrack on the agreed points.
Since then, maintaining the 2015 agreement has become a difficult task.
Trump signs a policy of maximum pressure
US President Donald Trump signed orders on Tuesday, February 4, to restore the policy of "maximum pressure" against Iran. The decision is aimed at allegations that Iran is trying to acquire the ability to produce nuclear weapons.
Iran denies any such desire and claims that its nuclear program is solely intended for peaceful purposes.
According to Araqchi, "If the important thing is that Iran does not try to produce nuclear weapons, then this is achievable and it is not a big problem."
According to the AFP news agency, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has a long-standing fatwa that prevents Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
On Wednesday, February 5, the head of Iran’s nuclear agency, Mohammad Eslami, reiterated that his country is adhering to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty. He added that “Iran neither has nor will have a nuclear weapons program.”
Iran’s nuclear talks with Western countries
In January of this year, before Trump returned to power, Iranian officials held talks on their nuclear program with Britain, France and Germany.
The talks were described by both sides as “open and positive.”
A few days ago, Iranian diplomat Majid Takht Ravanchi said that a new round of talks was expected “within a month,” but he also said that no date had been set.
