Tel Aviv/Sanaa (UrduPoint News - 27 December 2024) Yemeni Houthis have fired missiles in response to the Israeli army’s air strikes on Yemen. Israel says its defense system has destroyed a missile launched from Yemen.

According to the Israeli army, the missile was shot down before it entered Israeli territory. Due to the possibility of missile debris falling, sirens were sounded in several areas in central Israel. The Israeli newspaper “Times of Israel” says that an air alert was announced due to the missile coming from Yemen, after which people rushed to shelters in chaos. During this, 18 Israeli citizens were injured in a stampede. Meanwhile, Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv was closed due to the threat of a missile attack and the movement of passengers was stopped for about 30 minutes.

On the other hand, Israel has targeted several facilities controlled by the Houthis, including Yemen’s Sanaa International Airport. Six Yemeni civilians have been confirmed dead in these attacks. The Arab Broadcasting Agency has reported that, citing the Israeli military, military facilities located in the ports of Hodeidah, Salif and Ras Qanatb, in addition to the international airport of the capital Sanaa, have been targeted. 25 fighter jets took part in the Israeli airstrikes.

According to the Israeli military, Yemen’s Haziz and Ras Qanatb power plants have also been attacked. According to the Houthi-controlled television, three people were killed in the Israeli attack on Sanaa Airport, while three people were also killed in the attack on Hodeidah Port, while 40 people were injured in other attacks. Before the Israeli attacks, “Al-Masirah TV” had reported that they were ready to attack Israel and that tension would be responded to with tension. The Houthis have been attacking Israel with drones and missiles since last year, and they present these attacks as a show of solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in an interview with local TV, said that Israel is the first country to launch an operation against the Houthis and we have just started our operations. According to a UN spokesperson, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has described the Israeli attack as dangerous. The Houthi Minister of Transport says that operations will resume today at Sanaa Airport and Hodeidah Port.
