Chambers should also be consulted in the process of appointing diplomats abroad: Mian Abuzar Shad

Business community pays more than Rs 1.3 trillion in taxes annually: Lahore Chamber President

Monday 9 December 2024

Lahore (News International / Pakistan Point News - NNI. 09 December 2024) Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Mian Abuzar Shad has urged the government to ensure the role of chambers in the process of appointing diplomats abroad so that the desired trade and economic results can be achieved. Commenting on a media report, Lahore Chamber President Mian Abuzar Shad stressed the importance of merit-based appointments to diplomatic posts.

He said that it is necessary to have capable and suitable people in these important posts so that not only foreign trade and investment can be promoted but also Pakistan’s position can be presented effectively at the global level. Mian Abuzar Shad urged the government to consult with the Chambers of Commerce and Industry in the appointment process so that only qualified and capable people are selected.

Along with this, he proposed that regular examinations should be made mandatory for these appointments and 10 more marks should be given on the basis of interviews by the Chambers of Commerce and Industry. The President of the Lahore Chamber said that the business community pays more than Rs 1.3 trillion in taxes annually and it is their right to be consulted on important issues that directly affect the economic future of the country.

He said that the main reason for Pakistan’s weak trade performance in the last 77 years has been that qualified people were not appointed to most important overseas positions and these people failed not only to promote Pakistan’s trade but also to effectively present Pakistan’s position at the global level. Mian Abuzar Shad presented several practical suggestions to the government to find solutions to these challenges and make Pakistan’s trade diplomacy more effective.

He said that the government should review the performance of all trade officers for the last three months and share these reports with the chambers so that the business community can get an opportunity to know how successful the officers have been in promoting trade. He said that every trade officer should be given a target of at least 2.5% trade promotion per quarter. In case of poor performance, two chances should be given and then he should be removed from the post. Moreover, the President of Lahore Chamber also emphasized the participation of Lahore Chamber in the committees established regarding IPPs.
