Islamabad (News International / Pakistan News - 11th December, 2024 ) The new turn in the Syrian civil war, which saw the fall of President Bashar al-Assad on Sunday morning, has added to the already worrying situation in the Middle East.
Fighters from the Syrian opposition group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham have entered Damascus and President Assad has fled the country.
In response to this situation, many international leaders have both warned and expressed hope for the future.
US President Joe Biden
A statement issued by the White House in the United States regarding the latest situation in Syria said, “President Joe Biden and his team are closely monitoring the extraordinary situation in Syria, and the US administration is in constant contact with its partners in the Middle East in this regard.

US President-elect Trump
US President-elect Donald Trump, who will be sworn in next month, said in a statement posted on the social media platform X, “Assad is gone. He fled the country. His protector Russia, under the leadership of Vladimir Putin, has lost interest in protecting Bashar al-Assad any longer.”

Donald Trump added in his post, “Russia and Iran are currently in a weakened state. One because of the war in Ukraine and its poor economy, and the other because of Israel and its military successes.”
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani wrote in a post on X about the events in Syria, “We are following the current situation in Syria with close but concerned attention and we are also in constant contact with the Italian Embassy in Damascus and the Prime Minister’s Office in Rome.

The UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, said in his response that the most important thing is the clear desire expressed by millions of Syrians that everyone in the country should walk together and work for peace and stability at this time.’’

British Deputy Prime Minister
British Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner said that the UK welcomes the end of the Assad regime in Syria. The London government was already working to evacuate all British citizens from Syria.
Chinese government response
In Beijing, the Chinese government expressed hope in its response to the latest situation in Syria that the Middle Eastern country would return to “stability as soon as possible.”
In the wake of the Islamist Syrian rebels’ takeover of Damascus and President Assad’s flight from the country, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement in Beijing, “China is closely monitoring the developments in Syria and hopes that the country will return to stability as soon as possible.”
