UN chief urges Israel to relinquish control of Golan demilitarized zone

 Saturday 14 December 2024

Islamabad (News International / Pakistan News - 14th December, 2024 ) : United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed concern over hundreds of Israeli airstrikes in Syria since the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad's regime, saying that the Israeli army should relinquish control of the demilitarized zone in the Golan.

He said that Israel's recent large-scale violations of Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity and its advances in the strategically important Golan are extremely disturbing.

Infiltration and airstrikes

On Sunday, after Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and other armed groups took control of Damascus, the Israeli army captured an empty Syrian army post in the Golan border area and the buffer zone between the two countries.

The UN Security Council established the UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) in 1974 to monitor and maintain a ceasefire between Israeli and Syrian forces in the Golan Heights.

The Israeli military says it is temporarily in the area until new security measures are in place. Israel has also carried out air strikes across Syria on weapons depots, military installations, airfields and naval vessels in coastal areas, which it describes as “defensive measures”.

Need for de-escalation

The Secretary-General has said there is an urgent need for de-escalation across Syria. Many areas of the country are not controlled by the HTS.

Several armed groups have established themselves in the south. In the north and northeast, Kurdish fighters have reportedly captured the city of Deir ez-Zor. In the central regions, there are also groups declared to be affiliated with ISIS, where US warplanes have targeted them this week.

'Golan agreement intact'

The Secretary-General has made it clear that the 1974 agreement to withdraw troops from the Golan is still valid and must be upheld. All military presence within the buffer zone in the area must be eliminated and steps that could undermine the ceasefire and stability in the Golan must be avoided.

He also says that it is essential to support a credible, orderly and inclusive transition of power in Syria.
