ISLAMABAD (UrduPoint News International/ Pakistan Point News - 03rd January, 2025) South Korean investigators failed to execute an arrest warrant against impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol after arriving at his residence.
South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency reported that authorities faced resistance and were forced to halt their operation after a nearly six-hour standoff.
South Korea: Court issues arrest warrant for President Yoon
Yonhap reported that investigators entered the presidential residence through heavy security barriers but were blocked by a military unit inside the compound. After dealing with the unit, when authorities advanced, they were confronted by the Presidential Security Service, which continues to protect the president after his impeachment.
Officials from the Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) halted the arrest attempt at around 1:30 a.m. due to concerns over the safety of their personnel.
"It was decided that it was practically impossible to execute the arrest warrant due to the ongoing impasse," the CIO said in a statement.
Resolution to impeach acting South Korean president also passed
Yoon's lawyer said investigators were not acting legally and further legal action would be taken against the move.
Hundreds of the president's supporters gathered at his residence in an attempt to block investigators.
Arrest warrant issued by court
On Tuesday, a Seoul court issued a warrant for Yoon's arrest after he failed to appear for questioning after multiple requests and refused to allow a search of his offices in the South Korean capital.
Parliamentary impeachment motion for South Korean president fails
Authorities are examining whether Yoon's short-term declaration of martial law on December 3 amounted to a coup.
He could become the first sitting president in South Korea's history to be arrested.
Yoon's supporters continue to protest
President Yoon has vowed to "fight to the end" in his challenge to the arrest.
Supporters camped out overnight to protest the arrest warrant against Yoon and chanted "illegal warrant is wrong" during a meeting with investigators and media at the presidential residence on Friday morning.
What next after South Korea's failed martial law?
"I will fight to the end to protect this country together with you," the president told his supporters on Thursday.
